Hello and a Toyota machine question

Thank you for adding me to the forum. I am new to this forum but have been machine knitting for a while. My first machine was a Toyota KS901, which was put to one side when I acquired a Brother KH940. I have decided to gift the Toyota to my daughter but cannot find the ribber clamps. Does anyone know if Knitmaster clamps would fit? They are all I can find. Brother ones definitely don’t fit.

Welcome to the forum!
We are lucky enough to have some machine knitters here. Maybe

@Beth_leatherman or

@MK_er can help with your question.

I’m sorry; I have no idea.

Thanks to everyone. I looked at many, many photos of Toyota ribber clamps and came to the conclusion that the nearest match are the Brother ones. All that prevents them from being used are two small nubs of metal that prevent a good fit. I had spare Brother clamps, so I have modified them by sawing and filing off the nubs. They fit and it works, hurrah!

Glad you were able to make the Brother clamps work. The Toyota machines were also labeled as Elna machines. Some of them had interchangeable parts with the Silver Reed or Studio Brand so normally a Brother part would not work. Studio is the only brand of those that are still being made. There are several dealers around the world. There are several groups on Facebook that are quite active as well if you need more help. Feel free to reach out. I am by no means an expert but have been machine knitting, mainly on mid-gauge machines, for many years. My standard gauge machine is a Studio SK 303. I have a Brother 930 but due to a number of reasons, I don’t use it and plan to sell it and all of it’s accessories.

Thank you for responding and for the useful information. I knew about the Elna connection but not the Silver Reed. I have amassed a large amount of knitting machine paraphenalia and a lot of it has ended up mixed up. I have a horrible feeling that the clamps disappeared along with a couple of machines that I gave away. Oh dear!

I will keep my ears open for anyone looking for a Brother machine. The only thing that I am hunting for, for my own use, is a garter carriage.

Have you tried the machine knitting group on Ravelry? They have a section devoted to machines and machine parts.

That’s a good idea, I had forgotten about that group, thank you!

I was watching a YouTube video the other day and the lady in it was knitting on a Silver Reed KH840. I noticed that she wasn’t using any weights, she was knitting fairisle. Is this something that is true for all Silver Reed machines and is it just with fairisle?

The Silver Reed/ Studio metal bed knitting machines don’t need weights for most knitting projects. A tuck stitch design might need weights added. If you are using the plastic bed “hobby” machines they will still need the weights.

Thank you, sorry for my late reply! I have a Knitmaster sk155 but I have never attempted knitting without weights, I will give it a try! :slight_smile:
