I’m making a medium size. I have completed the ridge pattern and have the stated 91 stitches (row 18). The next row how ever needs 92 stitches to complete it as written. How can I adjust to keep the lace pattern and finish the sweater? I found this pattern on AllFreeKnitting site.
Heirloom Lace Pullover by Bernat
Welcome to KH. Is this your pattern? http://www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitted-Sweaters/Heirloom-Lace-Pullover-from-Bernat Because of the way it’s written, it might be helpful if you copy/paste the relevant portions of the pattern, but only a few lines because of copyright issues please. My reading puts you into the lace pattern at row 18. Is that correct?
Yes, that is correct.
Thanks for the link, GG.
I see the instructions for medium size as ending with:
"15th row: K2. K2tog. *yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K3. Rep from * to last 7 sts. yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. ssk. K2. 93 sts.
17th row: K2. K2tog. K2. *yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K3. Rep from * to last 9 sts. yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K2. ssk. K2. 91 sts.
18th row: Purl.
Lace Pat is now in position.**"
So it seems that you end with 91sts. The pattern all adds up correctly. After this part, there are alternating decrease rows to 51sts but I don’t see a row that requires 92sts?
If one knits row"19" as written, there is one stitch shy at the end. Thus while 92 stitches isn’t stated in the pattern. It is what is required to follow the pattern of row"19" if the pattern is followed.
Is this what comes next? Which row of the lace pattern would you be on? Maybe you could copy/paste it here please.
All sizes:
1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Pat to last 4 sts. ssk. K2.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows until there are 47 (51-51-53-53-53) sts. Leave rem sts on a st holder.
It would be row 1 (RS). K2. K2tog. Pat to last 4 sts. ssk. K2
There are 8sts (4 at beg and end of row) that would leave 83 stitches as written. The pat is 6 stitches each which would require 84 sts to do 14 of the pattern ( yo. sl1. K2 tog. psso. yo K3)
On the last repeat of the pattern stitch ( yo. sl1. K2 tog. psso. yo K3) do a k2. So that’ll be ( yo. sl1. K2 tog. psso. yo K2). Then you should be at the last 4sts which have the ssk decrease.
From here you’ll be decreasing at each side until the given number of sts. I doubt that the fact that one shoulder has one fewer stitch will ever be noticeable.
You will have to be careful with the decreases in the pattern stitch however. It map be easier to give up a pattern repeat when necessary and convert those sts or some of them to knit sts. This is so you don’t unbalance the 2 yarn overs and the double decrease.
I thought your idea about K2 at the end of the last pattern was good. I had another thought. Would it work if I added a stitch at the end of the row to make the end as written (ssk, K2)
You could do that if you like or you could skip the ssk on this row. It might be easier when it comes to seaming if you don’t have an added stitch. Leaving out the ssk will effectively bring you to the same stitch count.
Try the extra stitch and see if you like the look. Should work fine.
I am doing the back and on the raglan shaping for L after starting the lace pattern again on 95 st it has 4 rows which decrease the stitches by 6 then repeat the 4 rows twice more leaving 83 sts, this actually leaves 77 sts.
Has anyone done this jumper and worked out what is best to do as the next 2 rows you decrease till 51 sts left.
Welcome to KH!
Can you quote exactly the rows with the decreases? Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern, just the directions for the decrease rows. We can’t post large portions of pattern due to designer copyright but a few rows is fine.
Hi,
This is the end of the lace pattern for :
Sizes L, XL and 2/3XL only:
17th row: K2. K2tog. K1. yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K3. Rep from * to last 8 sts. yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso.
yo. K1. ssk. K2. (95-101-125) sts.
18th row: Purl.
Lace Pat is now in position.*
Then the next step is :
Sizes L, 2/3XL and 4/5XL only:
1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Pat to last 4 sts. ssk. K2.
2nd row: P2. P2togtbl. Purl to last 4 sts. P2tog. P2.
3rd row: As 1st row.
4th row: Purl.
Rep last 4 rows (2-11-7) times more. (83-59-55) sts.
Thank you for getting back to me, I think maybe just repeat the last section once but need to be correct as do not want to waste my time and money on a jumper I really like. Heirloom Lace Pullover

The numbers for L make sense if you repeat the last 4 rows 2 times. Delete the “more.”
(95-12=83)
For the 2/3XL works with a repeat of 7 times. The 4/5XL doesn’t work but is close to 11 times.
Since you’re working the L, I’d say work the 4 row repeat twice more and then go on to the next set of decreases.
You’re not the only one to complain about the repeats. If you look down in the comments toward the bottom, there is exactly the same situtation described for the L size. There’s also a problem noted on the Fronts where the directions are split for 2 sets of sizes. The size L is repeated in both sets of directions!
Thank you, I agree with what you say.
So when I come to doing the front what do you suggest is best to do on that situation?
Many thanks
Blondie
Aha, like the back the front has 2 sets of instructions for some sizes. I would follow the first set then the 2nd set (in other words work both one after the other).
It seems that this was edited to shorten the pattern but it certainly is confusing!
