Having trouble with pattern

I am new to knitting and trying this pattern. I have tried 3 times but always have stitches left at end of row. Is the pattern correct? Thanks!

Abbreviations:
k - knit
yo - yarn over
k2tog - knit 2 stitches together
ssk - slip one stitch knitwise, slip one stitch purlwise, and then knit them together through the back loops
Instructions:
Cast on 42 stitches loosely. Purl one row. Begin lace pattern.

Mist Lace pattern: worked over 8 rows (see chart below)

Row 1: (right side) k1, yo, k2tog, k1, *yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k2, repeat from * once more, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, ssk, yo, k1
Row 2 and all even numbered rows: purl across
Row 3: k1, yo, k2tog, k1, *yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, k1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1, yo, k2, repeat from * once more, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, ssk, yo, k1
Row 5: k1, yo, k2tog, k1, *yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k3, repeat from * once more, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, ssk, yo, k1
Row 7: k1, yo, k2tog, k1, *yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, k2, repeat from * once more, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, ssk, yo, k1

Stitches left on which row?

I casted on 42 and purled the first row. I started the pattern “row 1” but had stitches left at the end of the sequence. I can’t recall exactly how many. I have done it twice…seems like at least 16 left. It just doesn’t seem like the pattern uses 42 stitches…I am new to this, so maybe I am missing something in the pattern…

By my count, you should use 42 stitches to complete the first pattern row.

Make sure you repeat the section between the * twice, and remember that the yo is just that–put the yarn to the front before the next stitch.

Row 1: (right side) k1, yo, k2tog, k1, this uses 4 stitches

*yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k2, worked twice, this section uses 30 stitches repeat from * once more,

yo, ssk, k2tog, yo,1, ssk, yo, k1 this section uses 8 stitches

Thanks for your help. I figured out where I was misreading the repeat. I knitted that row 1 of the pattern and used all of the stitches. I went to purl row 2 as indicated, but it was very hard for me to see the stitches. Many appeared crossed, and I ended up purling extra stitches. I don’t know if that happens because of the yarn over? I tried practicing with a thicker yarn because that one is so fine, but I still had difficulty discerning the stitches…I have watched an online video and think I am doing the yarn over correct. I may have to go by the knitting shop for some help…

Sometimes the stitches next to the yarn over try to sneak under the yo and so on the next row you have to tease them out and make sure the yo is in the correct place. It helps not to make the yarn over too tight. if it’s a little loose, it’s easier to see where it goes and to move it to the correct position.

Thanks. I will try that and keep practicing.

At first, the stitches seem to have a mind of their own, but you will find that with more practice it will get easier, and the stitches will behave. Like anything, with practice it gets easier and better. One day you will struggle with something, and give up on it few times, and then you’ll try it again one day and it will seem easy. So just practice with a lot of different stitches and yarns and it will fall into place.
