Having trouble knitting a lattice lace hat

Hello, This is my first thread on this forum. I am trying to knit a lattice lace hat. I have a pattern and the address to that pattern is: http://penguinhorde.blogspot.com/2006/10/latiss-hat-knitting-pattern.html

I am fine with the garter stitch part but once I get to row 10 the problem starts. For row 10 I am supposed to k2to yo until the end. Then for row 11, knit and then for row 12, k2tog yo to the end of the row. When I get to the end of row 12 I have one stitch, not two like in row 10. It goes from an even number of stitches to an odd number of stitches on the needle.

I tried to just do the lattice part in a smaller, practice thing. I mean I cast on 10 stitches with separate yarn and needles. Then I went ahead and did the k2tog, yo to the end and knitted the opposite row. I am almost a hundred percent positive that I did not miss a k2tog or a yo. I still end up with the same result. I start off with an even number of stitches and end up with an odd number of stitches. Is that supposed to happen? Am I making a mistake?

Any help would be so greatly appreciated. This hat is so cute and I want to make it so badly. Thank you.

I can only suggest to be careful counting as you go across row 2. Maybe it would help to put stitch markers every 10 stitches to make it easier to count. At the end of the first YO row, you should still have 72 stitches.

Another thought - so many people make the mistake that part of a YO is to knit the next stitch. Could you be doing that? You should not be.

oh, and don’t forget the last YO. It’s not so awkward when working in the round since the very next stitch would be the 1st knit of the next round. But you might be loosing it on your 10 stitch sample since you are not knitting in the round but stoping and turning your work at the end of a row. That might be why your 10 stitch sample is off.

Thank you. I was missing the last yo. It was as simple as that. I tried it in my 10 stitch sample and now it is working. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Now that I know how to do this I can finish my hat. :yay: :knitting:

This isn’t a reply, but it is a very similar problem.I’m knitting a cafe curtain, in what is called checkerboard mesh. I have caste on 188 stitches about 4 times, on circular needles.Every time I have to rip it out, due to loosing track, or ending up with the wrong # of stitches at the end of the row. The 1st and every odd row is simply purling. The even rows are a combination of SSK decrease, K2tog., YO, etc. I think I understand all this. My question is, is there a way to keep all the stitches correct, and if I make a mistake, can I frog it? So far, I’ve been trying to be very mindfull, writing down as I go, but I ended up with 6 stitches at the end of the row, which is not enough to complete another pattern. How do lace knitters keep it all mistake free? Would 2 needles be better? Would 2 needles fit 188 stitches? (I have decreased the original pattern from 198 stitches to 188 stitches)but this shouldn’t be a problem since the pattern says the pattern is a multiple of 10. Can anyone give me some tips on how to complete this. Thanks!

When you do the YO, make sure it’s just a wrap around the needle, not a wrap and knit. For that many sts, stick with the circs, they’ll be too crowded on straight ones and it’s easier to drop a stitch that way. What you can do is put a marker at the end of every stitch pattern repeat, every 10 sts. You’ll have about 4 edge sts, then the first repeat, place marker, next repeat, pl marker, etc and end up with 4 edge sts on the end. That way you can tell if you forgot to do a dec or something along the way. And of course you can rip it out if you make a mistake.

Thanks, I’ll let you know as I proceed. I’m going to go out and get some of those stitch markers, like half circles of plastic that you can insert in the knitting, and take out as needed. I think this will help. Right now, I will rip it, and caste on my 188 stitches, hopefully for the last time!!!

You should get the full circle ones that go on your needles and travel up the knitting as you go.

It says for this pattern, that there is a multiple of “ten stitches plus four”. Here is row 2- K4*yo, ssk, k1,(k2tog,yo)twice, k3; rep from * to *. Does this give me 14 stitches for this section of the pattern and is this okay?

Yes, there’s 10 sts between the *s, then it starts out with the k4. But you would knit it in multiples of 10 sts, then add 4 to that number. So you would need 24, 34, 44, 54 etc sts to make the curtain.

It all makes sense, in theory, but , here’s another question. Then why do they ask me to cast on 198 stitches, and not 194?

There maybe another 4 sts at the end for an edge.

So, here’s another question, and thanks so much for being so helpful. Why do they ask for 198 stitches to be caste on, and not 194

So, here is one more question. Why do they ask me to caste on 198 stitches, and not 194?

The extra 4 may be for the edge sts at the other end.

Okay, thanks very much. I will caste on 198 stitches, and follow all your recommendations, and see what happens. I guess I will consider this to be a learning experience, although it is frustrating right now.
