Having to go up yarn weight? Strange?

Ok, I’m thinking of making the Maude Louis jacket and right now I’m trying to figure out my swatches. The yarn the pattern calls for is worsted weight which was great since I had some worsted weight yarn that was just begging to be made into something :happydance: . So I start making my swatch…and fail…I tried again with a larger needle size…and I still failed :wall: …so I tried a larger needle…and finally got the correct gauge :happydance: ! The problem? It seemed like the yarn was too thin and so it was making a really loose, “I can see through the knitting” type of thing :!!!: . So I decided to try with a bulky yarn…and it worked perfectly :cheering: . So I guess what I’m asking is if using a thicker yarn then your supposed to is fine? I feel really strange and weird because of this because I’ve heard of going up (sometimes several) needle sizes, but I’ve never heard of going up yarn weight…is what I’m planning on doing acceptable?

That happens with me too… I automatically go up 2 sizes when starting my swatched, and it’s so frustrating when i get gauge but don’t like the look of the fabric :wall:

With a heavier yarn, you just need to know two things:

  1. you may need to adjust your yardage amounts (ie, buy more)

  2. more bulk = less drape. Is your jacket supposed to be flowy–if so you’re going to loose that “airy” quality. On the other hand, if it’s supposed to be fitted, you might not mind the fabric being thicker.

Thanks for letting me know I’m not the only one out there with this problem. hehe. I’ve decided to not do that project because I really can’t buy more yarn. Excess yarn around me that doesn’t get used just irritates me and I really should just buy more yarn for a project I’m already working on that I ran out of yarn for. I guess I’m not a yarn stash person and I would rather just have the yarn I need for a project I’m working on…I’m weird I know…lol
