I finished the first in a pair of fan lace socks. It’s a tad big (around-wise, that is). I typically have to go up two needle sizes to get gauge, so I automatically did this as well…yeah, yeah, bad girl for not doing a proper gauge. But I thought that the lace pattern would make it tighter…it was the other way around, I think. Plus, this was my first “official” toe-up sock, so I didn’t really know what to expect.
My first thought/hope was that maybe the sock will shrink a little, but it’s a cotton blend, with the cotton part only constituting 34% (It’s Regia), so it probably won’t shrink.
Anyway, I’m thinking about doing the second sock in the proper needle size. If it comes out okay, I’m thinking about frogging the first sock :wall: and re-doing it.
Well, you’re not going to wear a sock that’s too big. I’d do the gauge swatch, get the needle size, do sock 2 in that needle size, and once you’re sure it fits, frog the other one.
I think you’re on the right track. If the second one fits, frog the first. I made one pair of socks that was too big and I never wear them. So you might as well make 3 socks and wear them!
Learning to make socks is an interesting learning process. First, you have to get comfortable using DPNs (or whatever needles you use). Then it takes a while to understand the actual construction of the socks. Then you start figuring out ways to customize (other than regular mistakes ) your socks.
I think it will be interesting to see the difference between a sock knitted on size 1 versus size 3 needles.
I have figured out that if I’m going to knit a 12-stitch pattern, the number of CO is going to be higher, hence I need a smaller needle to accommodate the number of stitches. I’m usually a tight knitter, which is why I go up in size. But I also think that my tension is starting to loosen up a bit.
Anyhow, I’ll go ahead and change needle size and see what happens. Guess my kids are not going to get their bathroom rug (my next project) just yet. :teehee:
Thanks for the advice. As always, y’all are the best!
