I have found some old yarn of my mother’s, circa 1960, Woolworth brand. That’s how old! I really like it. It says 50% Acrylic, 50% nylon. 4 ply, 3 oz, 85 grams. But no length. About how much length is in a normal skein of Acrylic yarn?
I inherited some of that once too !! I recall it was a bit thinner than today’s Red Heart or Caron Simply Soft and Red Heart Classic has 146yds/3oz and CSS is 315yds/6oz (so 157 for 3oz)
There is no “normal” skein of yarn. The yardage will vary with the weight of the yarn and the manufacturer.
Thank you very much. That really helps. I am going to start something to remember my mother by with it.
How many skeins do you have and what do you have in mind to make from it? You might want to pick something that will allow leeway in the yardage. I have some yarn from a loved one that is OTN waiting for me to be able to work with it again. She loved the yarn and I wanted her to know it was being used so I started it while visiting with her. I’m making a one row afghan, I’ll knit till the yarn is used up.
ETA I just noticed that I didn’t call it a WIP or UFO even though I’ve not worked on it for months. It’s still OTN.
If you go to ravelry.com they will occasionally have listings of “antique” yarn. You could enter the name of the yarn and see what they come up with!!! That’s what I did with some yarn I’d gotten off craigslist and they had mine!
