I have the crown of the hat done and started on the brim, but I don’t understand the instructions.
I contacted Ms. Akrem by e-mail and she said just to follow the instructions and all would work out. dah!
It is stated to be an advanced beginner, I am past that, but can’t understand the instructions - as follows:
Brim:
Change to smaller circular needles and knit one round. (on the crown)
Turn work and using the cable cast on method, cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: Yf, sl1 purlwise, yarn in back, k18, k2tog, turn work.
Row 2: YF, sl1 purlwise, yarn in back, k to end.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until only 20 sts remain.
Continue to repeat row 2 for two more inches. Bind off all sts.
You’re going to be working the brim in the flat, that is back and forth (not in the round). You’ll cast on 20 sts and work with those 20 plus one additional st from the crown which gets ktog with the 20th st from the brim. You continue to incorporate a st from the crown on every other row when you repeat the k2tog. I think this may be easier to see when you actually do each row step by step.
You are working from the crown when you cast on the 20 st. Then you knit back towards the crown, ending with the k2tog (one of the cast on and one from the original crown sts) and turn the work. The next row is knit out to the end of the cast on sts. So you’re knitting along the extra 20 sts to the end of them.
You are probably not going to knit around the whole crown (I suspect there are more the ~20 sts on the circs for the crown), but only pick up one stitch from the crown at the end of every row 1 repeat (in the k2tog). And remember that you knit back and forth for the brim.
I do think this will become clearer as you see the sts in hand.
Ah, finally saw a picture of the hat and it looks like you will be knitting around the entire crown. Basically, you’re attaching the brim of garter st (from the 20 st cast on) to the crown with the k2tog at the end of every other row.
I’m so very glad to have found your posting. I read through the string of messages but am still stuck. I am hoping you (or anyone can clarify this for me).
So for the “Brim” section, I have already cast on the additional 20 stitches. For row 1: is says to “Yf,sl1 purl wise, yarn in back, k18, k2tog, turn work. So… before I turn the work do I just knit to the end of the round? Or, do I continue with the Yf,sl1 purl wise, yarn in back, k18, k2tog pattern until I get to the end of the row? Because if I do that, I won’t be able to complete the whole instructions for the last set before getting to the end, the last set would be like Yf,sl1 purl wise, yarn in back, k"8”. I think I’m making this harder then needed. But don’t want to have to start from the beginning. So I guess my question is do I do the instructions, then knit until the end, or continue doing the instructions over again until the end of the round even if you can’t mathematically complete it.
I’d really appreciate any help that can be provided.
No, knit 18, k2tog, then turn - leave the rest of the sts alone, you’ll work them later. Do what it says next after that. The purpose of short rows is to do a partial row for shaping so you don’t work then entire row.
Yes, as Sue said, ignore the other sts. You’ll just be working back and forth on the 20 brim sts (sl1, k18) and every time you get to the original hat sts, you incorporate one of those sts into the brim (k2tog). So you’ll be knitting the brim and attaching it to the hat at the same time.
Hi, thanks so much for your advice and help. I too, have been having so much trouble with this pattern, even though the site told me that ‘this is not a difficult pattern to work’ !!
Well, I do believe the directions could have been more detailed. I feel alot better seeing that I’m not the only poor soul who is having difficulty both in starting and finishing this hat!
I’d appreciate any help you can give me on the brim section.
If I’m understanding your answer to the above person, I will be making the brim in the flat with 2 single point needles and attaching it at the end to 80 of the crown end sts?
The instructions on the pattern speak of 'change to small circular needles and knit one ound???
I thought they meant to transfer the crown part to smaller circular needles and THEN do another knit round, THEN cast on 20 cable sts.
It makes more sense to me to just do it in the flat as you’ve said then attach it one st at a time to the crown.
Help?

The idea for doing the brim is that as you knit the brim sts back and forth, you k2tog to attach the brim to the crown. Every time you knit to one st before the inner end of the brim, you knit the last brim st together with a crown stitch until all the crown sts have been incorporated and the brim encircles the hat. So rather than do it at the end, after knitting the brim, you attach as you knit the brim.
