Handy book of patterns...typo?

Hi ya’ll, long time no chat. So I’m knitting gloves from Ann Budds “Knitters handy book of patterns”. I’m on page 19 for those who can follow along…
2 questions:

  1. On the thumb gusset increase, do I move the thumb gusset stitches to waste thread right after the last increase or do I do that after I’ve increased and knitted the next rounds required ("increase in this manner every 3 rounds)…so increase + 2 rounds and THEN move gusset stitches off needles??? Or right after the increase??

  2. Before the thumb gusset she instructs to inc 1 stitch at the end of the round, leaving me with (in my case) 49 stitches. After the gusset stitches are taken off the needle I still have 49 stitches since the increased stitch is not in the thumb gusset. Clear so far? Well then she instructs to CO a stitch to close up the thumb gusset gap on the next round and says that my total stitches should then be 49. But I already had 49, it should be 50 now right? Is this a typo or am I misunderstanding something??

Thanks!

It looks like you place the gusset sts on waste yarn after the last increase. I have never made gloves but I have used this book the make mittens so I am no expert but I think the 1 inc st before the thumb gusset is part of the gusset now. I may be wrong (I probably am) but I had some trouble with the gusset sts the first time I made mittens.

If you search for the publisher of this book (I can’t remember who it is) you can look for errors on their site. I remember there were a few for this book, so maybe that will help?

Okay, after the last increase, when you have the amount of gusset stitches that you are supposed to have, knit around until you get back to the first gusset stitch and put them on a holder or waste yarn.

I have this pattern book and haven’t had any problems with coming up with the right amount of stitches. I think (but I don’t have the book in front of me) that when you start the gusset, you make one, knit one, then make one. You use one of your stitches in the gusset, so when you cast on one after you put the gusset stitches on a holder, you have the correct amount. Does this make sense? If you’re still having problems, let me know and I’ll see if I can explain better.
