Gussets

The last sock that I knit required you to pick up an extra stitch between the gusset and instep as to close any holes that might appear. Can you do this even if the pattern does say it, and just knit an extra row in the gusset.

For example, the sock I’m working on now says to pick up 20 sts and work rows 1 and 2 on the gusset until I have 16 sts left on each needle. Could I instead pick up 21 sts and work rows 1 and 2 until I have 16 sts left on each needle.
If that’s not a good idea, how do you close up the hole that appears at the top of the heel/beginning of the gusset?

I have done that with the one I’m making now. But I didn’t do an extra row I just did a double decrease on the first row. But as long as you take that into concideration fi you are counting rows for the foot and not measuring to know when to start the toe, I don’t see why you couldn’t just work it one more row.

You sure can, as long as you pick up the same amount on both sides of both socks.
