Gulls and Garter stitch?

Hi everyone!

I can’t understand for the life of me what this means (from row 4 of the gulls and garter stitch):

“insert RH needle under strand 2 rows below, k next st on LH needle, drawing loop through st on needle and under strand in one motion”

Could anyone explain this to me? Is this just an elaborate way of saying “knit stitch in 2 rows below” (and if so, how exactly would go go about doing that? Newbie here :)) ?

Also – what does “(K1, P1, K1) into the next st” mean?

Thanks a ton!

Emma

Is it maybe wanting you to make a popcorn stitch??

I’m not sure about the gulls and garter stitch but k1,p1,k1 into the next stitch means…

knit the front loop of the next stitch(do not take complete the knit stitch of left stitch and take the stitch off the left needle) then bring your yarn to the front and purl the same front loop of the stitch on your left needle(do not complete the purl stitch of the left stitch and take the stitch off the left needle) then bring your yarn to the back and knit the front loop of the stitch on the left needle. Complete that stitch by taking it off the left needle. You started with 1 stitch and made it into 3(added 2).

I looked up the gulls and garter stitch on the Lion Brand website.
Row 2 K2, *wyif sl 5 sts purlwise, k3; rep from *, end last rep k2

Row 4 K4, *insert RH needle under strand 2 rows below, k next st on LH needle, drawing loop through st on needle and under strand in one motion, k7; rep from *, end last rep k4.

Looking at the picture on the site, I think you use the strand you created when you held the yarn in front when you slipped the 5 stitches in row 2. You k2, k2 then pick up the strand from row 2 k then next stitch on row 4 drawing your new loop through loop on row 4 and through the strand then k2, etc. You’re creating an upside down Vwith the strand you created in row 2. Hope this helps

Thank you, Wildflower! I really appreciate your help!
