I understand you knit each row with either ‘black’ or ‘white’ … Slipping the colour you didn’t start the row with… And working back the same way… Slipping on the return side wyif
That seems to be the general rule otherwise it gets impossible.
The problem I ran into: On a white row, I need to make new blacks, that haven’t been carried/slipped from the previous row… I am very new to mosaic, and would like to make my own designs. Is the website just incorrect even though it says it’s a valid design?.. Or is knitting mosaic this way not possible. Creating new blacks on a white row…?
(looking at the chart): I have blacks on top of whites, on white rows… And whites on top of blacks, on black rows…
What can I do in this situation? Or does anyone have any clear tips/rules on designing my own mosaic designs, for garter stitch?
Regardless if you do garter or stockinette, you do work the same chart row twice. (This is the normal, but sometimes you might actually stumble upon charts with also the wrong side rows.)
So in your case when doing mosaic knitting in garter stitch, on the wrong side you do exactly what you had been doing on the right side: you slip the same stitches that got slipped on the previous row and you knit the stitches you knitted on the previous row. Not until you have done this you go to the next row in the chart.
@engblom Hello! Thanks for your reply, I wish this was the problem. But it is not.
I do work the wrong side exactly how I did the first. The issue I am running into, is exactly what I stated above… Creating new whites on a black row, or new blacks on a white row, when the stitch below the new one isn’t of the same colour.
Having had time today to play around with it… Looks like the only way, (unless someone has a better tip for me) is just using both threads to knit. With no slips. To continue Garter.
I’ve often wondered about this too! I just think that the design options are limited by the mosaic rules. I found this page through Google. It might be worth looking for a similar to an playing around on screen rather than stressing your yarn! Can you combine techniques such as stranding or marlisle? You might find that a combination of methods gets the results you want! https://www.pakin.org/mosaicknit/
@Mel61 I think you’re right about that! Limited by the website rules. I just took the time to make sure my design wasn’t creating new colours, and only carried from the previous row.
It’s a good website to at least make a chart up yourself to screenshot for later. (which I’ve been taking advantage of since I do not want to remember how to use MS Excel right now, hehe. And A LOT easier than erasing designs on my grid sheets). It’s major flaw is the creation of new colours. I hope someone has a tip for that!!! I’ll be commenting on favourite youtubers’ mosaic work.
When I just decided to carry both knits on the same row (creating a stranded work), my 20x20 design became 7 inches long instead of 4, haha. So that didn’t work out so well. And the seams looked… not so nice! I’m not even sure what marlisle knitting is! Excited to look into it! Thank you for your reply!
Good luck! I have a jumper pattern with a mosaic section that I want to change! So I’ve been thinking about this anyway. I think the rules are to do with the mosaic technique rather than the website. I also have some stitch dictionaries so I’m hoping to find some base patterns that I can jig around a bit😂. It might also be worth searching for free mosaic patterns on Ravelry to see what charts they come up with!
