GORGEOUS Cable and Lace Scarf

OMG, I just found the most GORGEOUS scarf I have ever seen online!

The photo on the blog is too small to see how beautiful it is, so I have posted the enlarged photo here. :inlove:

I think I found a pattern for my Malabrigo.

That is a beautiful scarf!! Thanks for sharing. I’m printing it out right now. :happydance:

That IS beautiful!

I’m going to try to make a thinner scarf with Malabrigo yarn.

Here is my revised pattern. I think it’s right. If you see a mistake, let me know. I’m going to start knitting it tonight myself.

Just curious…is it reversible?

I would not think so. I think there will definitely be a back and front, because of the cables.

I grabbed a skein of wool-ease and started this today, was knitting away when I thought, whatever am I doing wrong? The cables seem offset. Went back and looked at the pattern and sure enough they Are offset. I’m still knitting and I do love it, (my first cables :happydance: ) but I keep wondering if it is going to bother me, all the way through the thing. Cool thing is the first cable lays toward the neck edge…

Maybe I am too symetrical?

I’m with you on that. I prefer symmetrical designs. I just want things to balance, you know?

That’s why I changed the pattern. My smaller scarf has a cable on each side.

I started the scarf this morning, and did the first set of 24 rows. My revisions are right! :happydance: I think it looks very nice with the Malabrigo yarn.

Oh, it’s beautiful! Love the Malabrigo version, too.

BUT … I want to change the pattern again, so that it is like the original, but ending at the 3rd cable – so that it is cable, lace, cable, lace, cable.

But as a newbie knitter, I’m not sure how to revise the original pattern.
can anyone help?

Thanks!
Ann

I’ll see if I can do it for you today.

Thank you so much, Shandeh! No rush at all … this one will be for me, so I can’t even start it til the Christmas knitting is done.

I think this should work for a symmetrical scarf with 3 cables and lace between them.

Cast on 46 stitches.

Sandy I love this scarf with your revisions. I just finished my first lace scarf and I’ve been looking for other patterns. I just printed out yours and I think I will make this for my sister for Xmas. Do you think I could use Patons SWS?

Hey Tammy! I was just thinking about you yesterday, when I had a cup of the tea you gave me!

I think that Patons SWS would make a BEAUTIFUL scarf with this design! The gauge is the same as the Malabrigo, and the SWS has soy in it too!

Just a note for those of you who are making this scarf.

Be careful with the yarn-overs. They are done differently, according to the type of stitch that follows them.

Amy has a video here about yarn overs before a knit stitch and before a purl stitch. You will be using the method before a purl stitch.
http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/videos//increase/yo-english-rds.mpg

There is also a DIFFERENT yarn-over in this pattern. The yarn over before the SKP. In this pattern, you will do purl stitches, then a YO, then a SKP on row 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, and 23.

For THAT yarn-over, your yarn will already be in front because you just purled a stitch. You will slip the next stitch knit-wise, then you will put your right needle in the next stitch, carry the yarn over to the back and pull it through to knit, then you will pass the slipped stitch over. It’s kind of complicated. Sorry! :pout:

I wish that Amy could do a video of that for you, because my little video camera will not capture the detail needed for it.

(edited to change “purl-wise” to “knit-wise”. I was wrong.)

One more thing. On Row 2 and all even rows, you should be purling the stitches that were knit on the previous row, and knitting the stitches that were purled on the previous row. Hope that helps.

That’s absolutely gorgeous, both versions! I think I’m more of an asymmetrical being or at least in this case coz I like the original for me although yours is beautiful too. I’m sooo looking for something to make right now, maybe I’ll give this a try.
Your instructions are super to have ahead of time!

Thank you so much!!!

You’re welcome, Ann!

I just made a video of the Yarn-Over procedure before a SKP in rows 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, and 23. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd1t6mgR_TA

It’s still processing right now, but should be available for viewing soon.
