hi, i was going to make a cable afghan with Rowan Polar yarn, but i can’t seem to find any anywhere…has it been discontinued? I think it has.
Anyway, suggestions would be appreciated. i have several in mind and was wondering if anyone has tried any of these and what you think. thanks in advance:

I don’t know about the substitutes, but here’s a link to a place that sells Rowan Polar and if you’ll search on ebay - there are pretty good deals on whole bags. And if you substitute, then you need bulky weight yarn.
I agree, you need to look at bulky weight yarns to substitute. I have not used Rowan Polar, but from what I can tell it is a single ply “poofy” kind of yarn that probably will not hold up well as an afghan.

Candicane, actually i’ve seen an afghan knit in Rowan Polar, ArtLady1981 knit one and it’s GORGEOUS! And as far as i remember she was pretty pleased about it and we all know she is very careful about her yarns:teehee:.

It is gorgeous! I was just giving my 2 cents based on experiences I have had with similar single-ply super soft yarns. They are warm and soft and cozy, but pill quickly. I would factor in how you plan on washing it. Polar is hand wash and a wet afghan (depending on size) is going to be hard to handle.

good thoughts. Artlady1981 is why i was wanting to use the Rowan Polar - because i loved that afghan. However, i had not thought about the “hand wash” problem with something that big. so now, i’m looking for a good substitute for Rowan Polar that is superwash bulky wool (does not have to be 100% wool). any suggestions would be great.
i found out that the Mission Falls 1824 is superwash - do you think that would be good. anyone used that yarn?
oh, i hope you didn’t think i was being rude or anything? I didn’t mean to sound that… About pilling you are absolutely right. I have a sweater i knit with Rowan Biggy Print and it pills awfully. I think i should get one of those shavers :think:. The question is really how often are you going to wash an afghan - and that depends on many factors - do you have small kids that can spill something on it or do you have pets that will declare the afghan their rightful property:rofl:?

That is how I got 30 skeins of “off white” Polar! She listed them for me, and I grabbed them up!

Rowan Polar is WONDERFUL! So far, I made a red aran afghan using Polar…and I also made an icy blue suit: a long cabled cardigan and st st seamless skirt (elastic waistband) and tam/beret!
I have not laundered either one so far. I don’t wear the icy blue sweater suit that often. Here is a “hint” Elsebeth Lavold gave us in her class about Viking Knits: She said “don’t wash knits all the time…they aren’t ususally ‘soiled’ at all…BUT before you fold them up to put them away…let them ‘air out’ on a flat surface overnight to ‘dry’…this allows any body heat & moisture to dissipate…then fold it up the next morning and put it away”. She believes in ‘airing’ her knits…rather than washing the tar out of them.
I guess practicality of her advice really depends on your body type, too. And if you are wearing the knit over a blouse or shirt…and if you are odorous.
The sweater suit has absolutely no pilling.
The afghan has some itsy bitsy pills on the edge of the ruffle. I was snipping them off last night as a matter of fact!
