Good Sock Yarn

Okay, I am a fairly new knitter and I want to knit some socks.
:x:I’ve knitted a couple pair, following Silver’s Instructions and they came out pretty good. But I need to know:
What is the BEST yarn for socks? I would really like a soft, kinda stretchy, yarn for these.

THANK YOU
sue

PS: Those little smiley guys are a HOOT! I love them all!

Oh gosh…there are so many! You should try doing a search on this forum.

I just made a pair using Lorna’s Laces, and they are just wonderful.

I have made a few pairs using Regia. And I have some Opal in the stash that I have to use …

as long as it is “superwash” otherwise you have to hand wash them. I’m really loving Lorna’s Laces Shepard Sock yarn.

My FAVORITE sock yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight. It is by far the softest stretchiest stuff I’ve used, and the colors are gorgeous. It’s hard to come by because they’re a small company and aren’t widely distributed.
Other Faves: Koigu, Claudia, Louet Gems, Lorna’s Shepherd Sock, and Fleece Artist Nova socks or basic merino socks. Little Knits is having sale on the Fleece Artist right now, so check it out. Yummmmm…

THANK YOU very much. I will check out that sale!

THANKS again everyone,:muah:

I’m still in the process of making some with this stuff called trekking. The color is pretty but it’s been hard to work with- very splitty. I started some others with cascade stripes and it’s been so much easier to knit with.

I agree. I just bought the Socks that Rock and they are really great. The yarn is not very thin, almost like a semi sport wt. The colors are terrific and the price is right in range with what other good sock yarn costs.

I really like knitting with Lorna’s Laces. Plus there are so many wonderful colors to pick from. http://www.theloopyewe.com/browse/yarns/lornas-laces/shepherd-sock/

I thought of another one: Shelridge Farms Soft Touch Ultra Fingering. SO yummy soft. They’re a Canadian company, so also more difficult to get in the US. They mostly have solids, but the handpainted ones that they do carry are SO pretty. But it’s the base yarn I love! The only place I’ve seen it carried retail is thesweetsheep.com: Solids and Hand-Painted.
(the Hand-Painted is much cheaper off the Shelridge website)

Here’s a site that’s having a Lorna’s Sale: https://id306.securedata.net/sandrasingh.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?cPath=130&products_id=1488&mmsid=fcb44ab1764afe779e90bd3ba25df357

And here’s the Little Knits sale (looks like quite a bit is sold out - must’ve been my buying spree last week!): FA Basic Merino Socks andNova Socks

is there a good yarn thats bigger than sock yarn… so you aren’t using the tiny toothpick size needles… :hair:

You could use sport weight yarn. Both Louet Gems Opal (solids) and Claudia’s Hand-Painted Sportweight are beautiful!

Lorna’s Laces also makes a soft squishy sportweight, and Dream in Color’s Smooshy is between a sport weight and fingering (plus DIC is dyed in the Chicago burbs!)

Another almost sport-weight is Colinette Jitterbug, which also has the yummiest colors!

Even though i’m linking them to canadian site, they’re all available thru US sites. I’m just too lazy to look for them.

Just finished a pair in Regia Stretch Color; very soft and stretchy. First time I’ve used it (I’ve knit around 30 pairs of socks), wore them the day after I finished them, am going to get more immediately!

I have to throw in another vote for Lorna’s Laces.
