I’m making fingerless gloves to sell at my local yarn store, to raise money for college. I made a pair about a year ago for myself and I sort of invented the pattern off of a generic glove pattern I found online (but seem unable to re-find) and a lace pattern from some socks. The thing is, I have unusually small hands. Now, I know quite a few people with smaller hands who complain about gloves being too big, so I’m making some in a smaller size. However, I have no idea how big to make them for people of both genders with normal-sized hands. I’ve googled the crap out of the subject, but haven’t found anything helpful that doesn’t involve changing the needles size and yarn weight. Please, I beg you, someone help me before I throw my Mac down the stairs!
My specs, don’t know if you need them: Wildfoote sock yarn, 50 gm per about 215 yds. 7 sts per in on size 1 or 2 needles (I use 2)
For my-sized hands I cast on 54 sts (is a little loose) and work ribbing for 6 rnds, then switch to lace pattern on back of hand and stockinette on palm for 12 before starting thumb increases, which continue for 23 rnds. I’m not entirely certain how many rnds I do before the pinky finger (12 sts = 4 cast on), but after it I work 4 in straight stockinette before doing the next three fingers (ring is thirteen plus pick up 6 and cast on four; middle is 15 plus pick up 6 and cast on 4; ring is 13 plus pick up 6. Dec by 1/4 every finger on 2nd row, except pinky.) Then go back and do thumb gusset (25 sts including the 2 sts that M1s were made from). Knit the two made-from stitches together, then the two most recently made sts - cast off first one, knit one round, then cast off.
…I hope that actually made sense. Anyway, pleasepleaseplease tell me how many sts to have after the ribbing for a women’s medium, a men’s medium, and a men’s large. Children’s sizes would be good, too.
