Given gauge doesn't match up with given measurements

I’d like to knit this hat, but I do not understand the instructions as far as measurements go.

The gauge is given as 12sts for 10cm. Then the instructions for a hat for a child with a head of 49cm call for a circumference of 52sts. But 52sts only add up to 43cm, so how can this be? :???:

I need to know, as my gauge is not the same as is given, and I want to convert the stitches. But now I don’t know whether to change according to the 52sts given, or to the head of 49cm I want the hat to fit around…

Any ideas are welcomed,
thanks in advance.

The pattern writers have likely accounted for stretchiness/give in the lower part of the hat. I suspect that the difference you see accounts for this stretchiness.

So, I would correct based on the pattern sts/size and not what you think you need.

Worse case scenario, it’s wrong and you have to frog/re-do it. Shouldn’t take long though, as it’s only a child’s hat.

I suspect that the difference is in the snugness of fit. For a 49cm head you would want to make the hat smaller than the head size by 2.5-5cm. Drops is using 5cm for this hat perhaps because of the bulky yarn. You don’t want the hat to fit too loosely.
So use the 12sts/10cm gauge and adjust as you need.

Thank you both for the swift reply. I’ll do that then

@RochesterKnitter: I agree, but it is a present for a child that I don’t see too often and it would be a bit of a let down when I have to frog it during the birthday party… I guess I should find a neighbourhoodkid with the same headsize

can you blow up a balloon to abou the right size? It’s not perfect but at least it’ll give you some idea of the fit.
