German Short Rows in the round for beanie

Hi everyone!
I’m trying to knit the POKERFACE BEANIE by HIP KNIT SHOP. It’s worked from the bottom up. The bottom is folded double and knit together, after knitting the double brim, it says “Turn the work, you will continue working in Stocking St, but “on the wrong side”. (Tip: to avoid a hole or a jog when you turn, you can make a yarn over that you knit together with the stitch next to it on the next round, or you can use the German Short Rows technique). Continue working in Stocking St in the round and decrease 4 stitches evenly on the first round (by knitting 2 sts tog). Repeat after 2 cm. Work until the hat measures 18 (20) cm”.
I have learnt to knit the german short rows technique in the previous projects (sweaters) but the instructions were a bit more detailed (for example: knit until x sts left, turn, work until x sts left, and turn… ). but in this pattern, i’m confused, when should i turn and how to proceed in the round?

Could anyone kindly guide me through this?

Thanks a lot!

Stella

You’ve been working on a knit row and now have completed the round joining the brim and body of the hat. Turn, slip the last stitch from the left hand needle to the right hand needle with the yarn in front and pull the yarn to the back over the right hand needle and to the front. On the next round work the double stitch as one.

Can you edit the link? It’s there twice, and so doesn’t work as posted.

Thanks for picking that up, ColoCro.

Hi! thank you for your reply and sorry that i forgot to put up the link of the pattern.
Please correct me if i’m wrong:

  • so on the first round, i turn, slip 1 st to create the double stitch, and purl to the end of the round,
  • the next round, should i PURL the double stitch, and continue purling the whole round? or should i turn, KNIT the double stitch, and knit the rest of the round? if yes, should i create the double st again? and where?
    Thank you again,
    Stella

You only need to turn once.
It seems to me that once you’ve knit, folded and joined the brim to the cast on sts that you can continue to knit in the round for the body of the hat. However, if you finish the join and are on the purl side, then the turn with a double stitch makes sense. Knit the double stitch and continue to knit in the round with no more turns. (Don’t forget the decreases on that first round.)

sorry i should have included more details of the pattern, so once i have knitted, folded and joined the brim, i should knit 1cm of stocking st, then turn the work to the wrong side, create the double st with german short row technique.
Here’s where i feel confused:
after creating the double st on the wrong side, and purl the rest of the round, on the next round, should i PURL the double stitch, and continue purling the whole round (and then turn, and knit the first round with decrease?)?
or should i turn, knit the whole round and KNIT the double stitch at the end (and then keep knitting in the round and start the decrease)?
thank you so much for your patience!

OK, if you work on the “wrong side” which a I assume is the purl side then purl the double stitch. Eventually you will have to make another turn to get to the knit side so I guess that will require a second turn (in that case knit the double stitch). Reading ahead may help with the need for these turns to the wrong side. Just make sure that when you turn up the brim, you’re clear about which is the outside or V side of the stockinette since that clearly shows in the photo.
Maybe it would help if you post a photo of your knitting so far?

German Short Rows are a great technique for shaping the crown of a beanie without creating holes or gaps! It’s perfect for a smooth, seamless finish. I love how it allows for more control when knitting in the round.
