I’ve decided on a baby blanket pattern I want to make as a shower gift for a family member. The mom and dad to be aren’t finding out the gender, but I don’t want a boring light yellow, light green and white blanket because it just doesn’t fit them. Does anyone have ideas of 5-6 colors that aren’t gender specific but would make a dynamic and fun blanket? Also I’m willing to take yarn suggestions too, but of course I want it to be super washable and baby friendly. The pattern is a log cabin design. Thanks in advance for the help and advice!
Go to the yarn store and let your imagination run wild… I make a lot of baby blankets, and I never, ever buy yarn from the “insipid baby palette” section.
Babies love bright colors, anyway… you could do a whole assortment of jewel tones, like purple, aqua, teal, fuschia, etc. … or a palette of brights in strong green, yellow, red, blue, orange, and purple. Or for a more muted tone, do a whole range of heathery greens like sage and forest, with cream and light brown thrown in. Purple is very gender-neutral, and you could do the blanket all in shades of purple from lightest violet to deep plum. Best of all, find out what colors they’re doing the nursery in, and take your inspiration from there.
Maybe check and see what colors they are doing the nursery in? I loved pumpkin orange, brown and tan for my son. Maybe with blue, girls can have blue stuff too!!!
I just finished a one of the oddball baby blankets that was a rainbow theme. It is very gender neutral and fun. If it were me I would do rainbow colors or primary color with black and white. No matter what colors you choose the blanket will still keep the baby warm and the parents will love it!
Caron Simply Soft is great for baby stuff. It comes in a ton of colors,is really readily available , soft, inexpensive, and washable. I use it all the time and people always think it is a more expensive yarn
Here’s a few done by other people that might give you some ideas.

i really like orange for gender neutral. also, reds, done well, can really be gender neutral. If the people are more into colors or something I would pick some wonderful varigated colors and go with that. Edge it in a nice tone of a gender neutral color like green, red, orange, or purple. Most any color can be pulled off as gender neutral (except pink) as long as the pattern isn’t froo froo. lol NO WHITE! My brother baby blanket (made by the grandmother) was light blue and white! omg, it was tan within a month and is now a disgusting shade of “stained yarn” that I can’t describe. lol boys and white blankys don’t go well together.
I usually use Bernat satin for baby blankets, its really soft but still worsted weight so it knots up quicker than the lighter weights.
I love Red Heart Soft yarn and Simply Soft by Caron for yarn types… And I wouldn’t do wool or wool blends just incase the baby ends up allergic to it. I know that it’s not a REALLY common allergy, but it would suck if the baby couldn’t use the blanket cuz of that.
As far as color what about a fall theme color… like dark blue, burgundy, dark yellow and orange, brown… like that
Or you could do Red, white and Black since that’s what babies see first. I’ve seem ones done like that and they are beautiful!
WOW! Who knew that I would have so much great advice in less than 12 hours. I can’t wait to get started now. And with all the great advice, I need more friends and family to start popping out babies! Thanks again!!
Walmart carries a 4 ply worsted yarn called ‘Monet’ which is a blend of jewel tones. I used it to make a blanket for a classmate who chose not to know the gender of her baby. Of course, mine was a simple pattern of stockinette and purl blocks with a seed stitch border, so the yarn might not work out for a log cabin pattern.
