I’m getting ready to start knitting a sweater-vest for myself.
The pattern I’m using is worked in garter stitch all the way through, but I was thinking of using stockinette stitch instead (knitting the first three stitches so it won’t curl). I was just wondering if using a different stitch than the pattern calls for will mess up my gauge; I am supposed to have 17 stitches for every 4 inches. I made a couple of swatches using sizes 7 and 8 needles, and I’m going to wash and dry them soon. I’ve never really bothered about checking gauge, but since I’m trying to make this fit without taking it out a few times, I decided that it might be a good idea this time!
If stockinette stitch will make things more complicated, I’ll probably just follow the pattern like it’s written. What do ya’ll think?
It will change it some. Garter stitches are basically square and stockinette stitches are narrower and longer. You will have to compensate.
A regular swatch is a good idea. But to get an idea how different they look also cast on say 20 stitches and just do garter. Now cast on 20 stitches and do stockinette for a couple inches. The garter o e is probably bigger.
I think, since this is my first sweater, I’ll just “follow the pattern blindly” and work it in garter stitch. I fear that if I add too many variables (different needle size, different stitch, etc.), it will end up being too big or too small. Maybe next time around, I can get more adventurous…:teehee:
I found this pattern on Ravelry, and it appeared that the people who had made the vest found it relatively easy. Hopefully it’ll prove to be a challenge that’s not too challenging!
That looks like fun to knit and for myself, the garter stitch gives it a nicer drape than stockinette stitch would. Have fun knitting it (and remember to do a gauge swatch–it’s a time-saver).
I really like that pattern, I think I’ll give it a go…what’s one more project ONT? LOL
Once you’ve made it I think you’ll be able to play around and make some changes, but part of it’s charm is the garter stitch IMHO, as mentioned above.
I look forward to seeing your FO! It should be a fun knit. I’m not good at posting pictures and have so many things OTN already it could be a while before I get to this one. I’ll have to free up some needles.
