Gauge Question

I want to make the Apricot Sweater out of Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece. The pattern says Gauge=16 st and 25 rows
Sizes are given for 34 & 36 bust. I’m a 36+.

Of course, I’ve been knitting a gauge swatch. Most people on Ravelry said they used US size 6 or 7 needles with this yarn and pattern. I’m not even getting gauge on size 10, and the fabric looks loose. (I get 17 sts over 4") (I’m really NOT that tight a knitter!)

Anyone have suggestions for me?

According to the stats on Ravelry the yarn suggested is 16 sts over 4 inches, the Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece is 20 sts over 4 inches. It looks like the gauge of the yarn is different so you will have more problems trying to get gauge.

I am having a similar problem making some LO yarn work for a hat for my husband. I can never get the gauge to come out right if it isn’t the right yarn! It’s so frustrating, it seems so easy, in theory…

Here’s a suggestion, can you get the gauge by doubling the yarn and using smaller needles???

Just a thought…

Good Luck!!

Would making a different size work?

Yes, you could use the needles you like the knit fabric best, then use a larger pattern size. You’ll figure your sts/inch, then multiply that times the finished measurement you want for a stitch number. Look at the pattern to find the size with front and back sts closest to the number of sts you need and follow instructions for that size. You will likely have to adjust the length according to the size you should be making.

The best thing you can do is not to pay attention at some one’s gauge. All people have their own style of knitting/crocheting. It is quite natural that you have different gauge using the same yarn and needles.

Just make your swatch and calculate number of stitches and rows necessary for your project.

Oh, if only that didn’t mean MATH! :roflhard: I’m using different yarn, but I don’t think I can just cast on and get it to work. I’m thinking of making the larger size. The link is cool for crochet, but I don’t know how to crochet! Was I missing something? Is there something on the site for changing your pattern for knitting?

Yes figure out if the number of sts for the Large will work with the sts/in you get using the needle size you want.

Jina,

Stitch swatch is just a stitch swatch. No matter whether you knit it or crochet. You don’t need to change your pattern for knitting. A simple logic to calculate gauge will still be the same. Just follow the link I gave above and you will be fine.

You do can use any yarn, cast on and get it to work. Any size you want. Be a little brave and try. Can you imagine that you won’t have to look for some one’s description any more?

All descriptions which you find for your projects are done exactly the same way : stitch swatch (a small headache for those whose swatch came out different ;))----calculations for your size----- done.

There is no any other way to calculate proper size to knit or crochet garment. Stitch swatch is the only one. A little more brevity!!!

Let me know if you have some troubles with calculations.

There’s always a calculator to help with the large numbers too…
