Hi, I have a gauge question. I am knitting a swatch in a rib pattern and am not sure how to measure to see if my gauge is correct. Do I measure the swatch as is when I take it off of the needles or do I stretch it slightly? :??
Thanks for your help.
Is the entire item/garment done in rib? If not, then you’d be testing gauge on the body st pattern, not the rib.
You want to stretch it so all sts are clearly visible. If necessary you might need to block it. If item is something like scarf, where there’ll never be much pull on the rib, you could measure right off the needles to get sense of width.

This is a vest and the entire vest is knit in ribbing. I have never knit an item completly in ribbing so this is new territory for me as far as getting the right gauge.
Thanks for your help.
I recently did a vest in rib but gauge wasn’t at issue so didn’t need to test it. If there’ll be sufficient stretch over the bust/chest area, make sure your stretched gauge works comfortably in there.
