Gauge and chart knitting

I have the problem that my knitting sts tend to have a different width:height ratio than is normal. For most knitting, this isn’t a problem, but I’ve had problem with knitting color work from a pattern: The images always look a little squatty.

My knitting sts tend to have a ratio of 7:9, rather than 5:7.

Since the height of sts is largely determined by the diameter of the needle, will loosening my knitting help?

Any advice would help. I really want to do some fair-isle, but I don’t want it to come out looking short and fat.

You could try loosening your stitches or going up a needle size (as long as you stay within the confines of the gauge). You might also try a different type of needle. I find I knit a little differently when working with wood or bamboo needles versus metal needles. Good luck.
