I am trying to knit a scarf and it says use the garter stitch. I can’t find it. I have no clue what it is.
Garter stitch is what you get by knitting every stitch - no purling.

If you are knitting flat garter stitch is all knit stitches on both sides…no purling.
If you are knitting in the round you will knit a row and then purl a row to create garter.
Jan, I didn’t think about knitting the round!! 
Or you can purl every row when working flat and you will get garter. It’s the name for a stitch that is quite basic, you will get squiggly lines of bumps on both sides.

Just knit every stitch. That’s garter stitch. When you knit one row and purl the next it’s called Stockinette stitch. Knit and purl are the two basic stitches. From there you can do anything. Good luck!
Well not exactly. Garter stitch is produced produced by knitting every stitch - when you knit flat. When you work in the round, you have to knit one round and purl one round to get garter stitch.
