Garter stitch always looks awful

I was wondering if anyone knows why this is–if it’s me (most likely) or an issue with the garter stitch itself that I don’t know about. I don’t have such tension problems on other types of stitches.

Generally, I don’t even like the look of garter stitch, but I am trying out a log cabin square for my sampler blanket and it uses all garter stitch. My horrible-looking, uneven stitching is ruining it. I will finish it, but may not even use the square in the end.

I hope that some light blocking and shaping after it’s finished will help it. I am using a 50/50 wool/acrylic blend for this square and don’t know how much blocking will help.

If the yarn is wool or some natural fiber blocking may help. If it’s acrylic you can’t block it. In that case washing and drying it may help. Check the label.

I too don’t like the look of garter st much, and for me it has nothing to do with unevenness. I just dislike the bumpy look. Maybe change the st pattern to something you like better?

Do you know of another stitch that would look nice with log cabin style knitting? Maybe moss?

I am using these directions:

Moss would look nice, but I personally would find the constant switching back and forth tedious.

Maybe a smaller needle to get tighter knitting?
