Frosted Leaves / DROPS 216-3 - Free knitting patterns by DROPS Design

Please I need help with this pattern. I am making size medium
I’ve done the neck ribbing at 72 stitches.
I’ve done 1st row of yoke as per instructions and following the chart A1 & A2 with the extra stitches in between both charted patterns to use up the 72 stitches in the round.
I finish this round with a total of 80 stitches.
When I try to follow the next row on the chart there are only 72 stitches there. (This is the second row with only knits and purls)

I’m tearing my hair out trying to work out where I’m going wrong… should I be adding the ‘extra’ stitches (in between the charted part) as written in the first paragraph of the yoke? To use up all the 80 stitches as there are only 72 on the chart.

If this is the case what do I do from here on in as the next paragraph of the yoke states that all increases are drawn in the diagram (of the chart) so assume I don’t do those “extra” stitches in between A1 and A2.

TIA

I count 23sts for row 2 of A1 and 13sts for row 2 of A2.

The first row of the pattern has 1+ 21 (A1) + 2 + 11 (A2) + 2 + 21(A1) + 2 + 11(A2) + 1 =72sts

There are 4sts dec and 6sts inc each time you work A1 and 2sts dec and 4sts inc each time you work A2. That adds up to 2sts increased for A1 and A1 chart row 2 and that’s shown in the charts for row 2. There are 23sts shown for A1 and 13sts for A2 in row 2. The sts outside the charts remain the same.

For the second row there’s 1+ 23 + 2 + 13 + 2 + 23 + 2 + 13 + 1=80sts

I may be misunderstanding your question but just let me know.

Thank you

That’s how I interpreted it too. But after that initial first two rows do I keep on doing those stitches in between the charted ones?

So on row 3 do I do 1+25+2+15+2+25+2+15+1 or only
25+15+25+15

Sorry I’m still quite new to knitting

Yes, keep doing the sts between the charts. Those sts are going to form the raglan lines that you see between the front, back and sleeves. On row 3 work 1+25+2+15+2+25+2+15+1.

Good for you for challenging yourself as a new knitter. This all gets easier the more different patterns you work. Come back with more questions anytime. We’d love to see a photo when you finish!

Thanks for your help.

Once I got over that hurdle it’s flying off my needles. But I may come back for help from you as I’ve almost completed A1 & A2 sections and after reading what I have to do next in A3 I am a little confused.

Mainly the part that states work A3 A over the first 5 stitches when the fifth stitch of A3 A is part of the “slip 1 as if to knit , knit 2 together and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted together stitches” when looking at the chart. Then to repeat A3 B until there are 6 stitches left. Again the B section lines cut through that group of 3 stitches with the black triangle through them.

Do you think there’s a mistake where the lines are drawn for sections A’ B & C’ in chart A3?

Hopefully you can understand which bit I’m referring to.

Hello
I do not think there is an error in the chart. It’s one of those things that pehaps makes more sense when it’s on the needles being worked.
The last stitch of the 5 in A3 A is a slip, then coming into A3 B for the next 2 sts and to complete the decrease. Then the last stitch of A3 B is a slip and you go back to the beginning of B for the next 2 sts to again complete the symbol and decrease nd kep doing B until the last set of sts when instead of slipping 1 and returning to the beginning of chart B, you will slip 1 and continue into chart A3 C.

You’ll probably have a moment of clarity when yo get to it. If not we are here.

Okay thanks for that tip.

I’ll get through A1 and A2 first and give the next part a try out first.

If I’m still struggling I’ll call on your help again. Thanks for your patience with me too. It’s much appreciated

There are several questions about the A3 chart on the Drops site and one suggestion from a Ravelry project knitter. Chart A3 leaves out the increases at each end so the suggestion is to skip A3 and continue as you have been doing on A1 and A2.

We’re happy to answer any and all questions so don’t hesitate to ask. It’s a very good looking pattern stitch and sweater!

Yes you are correct and after I’ve got to the third row of A3 I’ve realised. :woman_facepalming:t2: No I’m in the process of frogging out those said rows.

It’s a learning curve for sure. I have jumped onto the website pattern and read some of the comments. It looks like I’m not alone in missing those first yarn overs that you have to do BEFORE doing each row in A3. I just wished they had written it out a bit simpler or done a different chart as so many people have struggled with the same thing.

I’m scared to get to the next hurdle in this patter but one thing I can say is I do like how it’s turned out so far so I will continue with it.

I don’t understand the need for A3 or the reason to leave out the chart increases. (The increases are mentioned only in the text.) Drops patterns are translations and often over-specify. It’s good of you to dive into one of them.

You’ve gotten the pattern and shaping thus far so you’ve conquered one of the more difficult parts. Let us know how it’s going. One thing that may help is a lifeline, just in case.

Hi. I’ve been putting lifelines into this sweater and thankfully they have come in handy.i think I’ve figured it out now I’ve got back into A3. I’m actually just following the repeats they show on A1 as a guide because I can figure out which row I’m on and counting as I go. I know this isn’t ideal but it is working so I can advance in the project.
I have made a drops sweater just recently which was the first sweater I’ve knitted which though I know there are a couple of minor mistakes made by me, has turned out to be a wearable piece. I’m not sure if this link will work so you can see it…

This frosted leaves pattern though has been quite painful to say the least not only because I’m a newbie but it looks like even experienced knitters have had issues. I’ve been reading through all the comments both on the pattern website but also on ravelry. You’d think the pattern writers would take note and re-write it as the finished sweater though pretty shouldn’t be so painful to knit up.

As long as you can make it work, it is ideal. Using A1 as a guide is perfectly fine. The pattern design would have been more straightforward with it.
Your Forest Vines is lovely and looks perfect. Thanks for the link!
