then i should have 93 stitches.
i cannot get the first bit right at all do i knit 3 then cast off after the 3 leaving three on the needle or cast off using this 3 leaving 1 on the needle??? please help me

I suspect you are counting your BO stitches incorrectly. This can happen when you BO in the middle of a row, because remember in order to BO 1 you have to knit 2, as you need 2 stitches to BO one, but that 2nd stitch does not count as a BO stitch, it’s the first of the next knit stitches. Make sense?

CO 208 stitches
K3 BO 4
K4 (really 3 more) BO 4, repeat to last 2
K2, 116 sts

After you k3, you have to k 2 more for the first BO stitch. Then count how many sts you move over the other for the BO4, not how many sts you knit.

I didn’t cast on the stitches and knit this but I did make 208 hash marks and figured out what would happen.

K3 cast off 4,*K4 cast off 4 repeat from * to last 2 then K2

To do this knit the 3. Then knit 2 and lift the first of those 2 over and off (1 cast off), k1, lift over and off (2 cast off), k1, lift over and off (3 cast off), k1, lift over and off (4 cast off). Forgetting about the k3 at the beginning, the cast off part uses 5 stitches of your 208 and leaves you will only 1 of those 5. Don’t count that stitch anywhere. Then begin the next part that will be repeated: * k4, k2 lift the first of the 2 over (1 cast off), k1, lift over (2 cast off), k1, lift over (3 cast off), k1, lift over (4 cast off). Repeat from the * and you end up with 2 at the end. K2.

You will end up having done the cast off part a total of 23 times which gives you 23 stitches from those. You will do the knit 4 part 22 times. 22X4 is 88. You had k3 at the beginning and k2 at the end for 5 more stitches. 23+88+5=116.

Yes, for whatever it’s worth, I agree with Merigold (nice work there). That st sitting on the right needle after a BO is disregarded when you go on to k the next 4. That is, do just what the pattern says and k4.
The next row works out as well although it’s easier because you’re just purling together (decrease of 1 st, 23 times so you go from 116 to 93.
Sounds like a great border!
