I am working on the Lion Brand Landscapes renewed perry street cowl. it says to repeat the pattern nine times. So far, I am up to five times and my stitch count has almost tripled! Am I doing something wrong or is the pattern supposed to increase that much - it does not say on the directions. thank you
As I read it your stitch count should stay the same. I see four decreases (two ktog and two skp) and four yo increases.

It looks to me like the stitch count should not be changing.
Only row 4 has increases and decreases and these even out to the same number.
(K2tog)twice, this decreases 2
(Yo, k1) 3 times, this increases 3
Yo, increases 1
(Skp) twice, decreases 2
Total decreases 4
Total increases 4
You might have been working part of the repeat incorrectly.
Looks like 12 sts used each repeat on row 4 so perhaps try markers every 12 sts. The full instruction between the asterisk should be completed between the markers. 9 repeats.
If you don’t manage all the stitches within the 12 sts marked let us know so we can help work out where the tricky bit is.
ok I think I am doing YO too many times - i thought the YO was part of the SKP stitches the way I read it so I was doing a YO with each skp stitch so really not decreasing - it has added up quick doing that on rows 4,6,8,10 thank you

Yes, since only the skp is in parentheses, that’s the only thing that gets repeated. It balances the (k2tog) twice at the beginning.
