FO: Doily in #10 Crochet Thread

[COLOR="#300090"]I was looking at my FO pictures and saw this. It is an old pattern (Herrschners, [U]Crochet Patterns[/U] Nov/Dec 1990).
:oo: That means I was 20 something when I crocheted this for my mom. And later when I was 40 something she gave it back to me. :wink:

I disremember any details of the crochet thread brand or color. :sad:
Well, it is easy to remember that it is a verigated, cotton thread, size #10 if Iā€™m not mistaken.

Kind of looks tie-dyed. :wink: I still have a ball or so of the thread.

That is so beautiful, Jack. I wish I could learn to use small thread and hooks. My hands feel like tree stumps when I try. Do you think it would come with practice? (Keep in mind Iā€™m pretty old with some vision issues.)

I find thread crochet splits less than yarn. I use Boye steel hooks and need good lighting as I now need bi-focals. I think a loose stitch is also required (at least for me it is a must) for thread crochet.

Practice will always help, and a strong appreciation for the beauty of lace helps too. :wink: I tend to use small motions when working with thread. You may find some patterns that interest you at http://www.hassdesign.com/ or just search the internet for doily patterns.

pcmaya, no need to be intimidated by thread crochet! Itā€™s all the same stitches and techniques as with yarn, just on a smaller scale. Start with something very simple, like that pretty bookmark that Merryknitter posted on here recently. Then move on to other doily patterns that you find and like.

I have found that good light, Boye steel hooks, and an inexpensive pair of drug store reading glasses makes my thread crochet experience so much more enjoyable.

Thatā€™s very pretty Jack! Iā€™ve never tried crocheting with thread, but I think Iā€™m going to give it a try. What size steel crochet hook(s) would you recommend I get to start?

I use a Boye(r) set [B][U]#6276 (Steel)[/U][/B] with sizes 0, 1, 7, 8, 9, 10 (3.25mm, 2.75mm, 1.65mm, 1.5mm, 1.4mm, 1.3mm)

I donā€™t recall needing any other sizes. Also the larger steel sizes are equivalent to the smaller letter sizes. (Steel numbers are reversed in numeric size, so 10 is the smallest steel size while 0 is larger)
Steel 2 = US B-1 (2.25 mm),
Steel 1 = US C-2 (2.75 mm),
Steel 0 = US D-3 (3.25 mm)
