I write in desperation! I’m in love with a hat I saw. Normally, I see something and I think, “I want to knit that.” This hat, I saw it and thought, “I want to wear that!”
So, I buy the yarn … And I keep screwing it up!
Problem 1: I am a loose knitter so I went down two needle sizes. Seems like I have gauge. ?? In one of my many attempts, the hat seems too small, so perhaps I need to add stitches?
Problem 2: I don’t know how tight to pull “floats” when the design will cause them to be outside the hat.
Because I’m a newbie, the site won’t let me post a link, but I am attempting to knit a free pattern called “floating basketweave hat.”
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I’d suggest going up a needle size if it’s too small before you do anything else. With a pattern like basket weave you need to increase so the pattern will come out correctly.
If the pattern GG linked to is the correct one then it says on the pattern that’s is a multiple of 8. So if you like the fabric with the needle you are using increase by 8 or a multiple of 8 (16, 24, etc)

The pattern GC linked is the correct one, thank you.
Here’s the problem: pattern says to CO 84 st, then increase 12 to 96. I count, I’m good. So I begin to work the pattern. Around row 7 though, the pattern says “k2, yf, sl4, yb, k2 to last 2 stitches, then k2.”
Only I don’t have two stitches to do at the end.
I’m confused. What am I doing wrong?
Also, thank you for the advice on keeping the floats loose. This is all fairly new to me …
Row 7 is this in the pattern GG linked to:
Row 7: Remove marker, K1, replace marker (this won’t cause a problem because you replace
the wandering stitch on row 12), *K2, YF, Sl 4, YB, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.
I can see that moving the marker and starting the pattern with k2 gives you the offset of the basketweave pattern but I agree with you, you won’t end with 2sts left over. i’d ignore it and continue with the pattern. If you continue, the pattern works out as a repeat of 6sts around the hat. If you end with k2, you’ll have an area of 4 knit sts that breaks the pattern.
Or maybe I’m missing something too. No errata or mention of a problem on Ravelry.

The pattern changes at row 7 so that there are 6 sts inside * * instead of 8. Still, I don’t come up with a count that will leave 2 to knit at the end. Looking at what you’ve knit, what should be happening? Should you have 4 knits together? Maybe it’s a misprint.
I get a multiple of 6 also. I think it would be a good idea to contact the designer. Either something’s written wrong or we’re all reading in wrong. Me? I can easily misread but since salmonmac is coming up with the same thing, I think the pattern is miswritten.
