Fixing mistakes in a finished project

Hi all, I just finished a baby blanket and, after binding off, have discovered two holes in which I apparently dropped some stitches. :gah: They aren’t huge holes, but noticable to me. Any words of wisdom regarding how to fix these errors in my already completed project? Thanks! Melissa

If it were me I’d frog it but that’s me. How far back are they from the bind off? It’s not hard to undo the bindoff … I guess if it doesn’t bother you leave it - but it would bug me, bug me, bug me!

You can try to see if you can bring them up higher (look at Fixing a Mistake - dropped stitch, on the Tips page) and rip back to there. If they’re quite a ways back, bring them up a couple rows if you can and run a short piece of yarn through the loop on each one and thread those ends through the stitches around them.

The mistakes are right in the middle of the piece. I would have to frog about half of the piece to get to it. :frowning: A friend of mine said that she read somewhere that you can tie on some extra yarn and try to work it through, but she couldn’t describe exactly how to do it and couldn’t remember where she read it. Thanks for your advice though.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll see if that works. Otherwise, I may just have to get creative. Fortunately, the recipient of this project does not have a trained knitting eye!

It really depends on the type of yarn for the tying method your friend was telling you about.

This is how I fixed the prayer shawl with 2 holes (accidental y/o’s I corrected by knitting 2 together in the next row, probably. I used a tapestry needle & wove in a length of yarn. I tied it to the yarn in one side, made a knot for the middle of the hole, and tied it to the yarn in the other side, then wove in the ends. I think I also did some loopy loop fake stitches sewn in there just to wing it on the bigger hole.

This was my very 1st project, and it was using Lion Homespun (you really can’t see mistakes- I couldn’t even find where I fixed the holes when I was looking for them!). You could always try it then undo it if it didn’t work.

If it’s near the middle, I would also consider whipping up a square (baby feet dishcloth?) and sewing it on as a center panel (on the other side too) if it worked with the pattern and make it look intentional.

Good luck.

Thanks Renee - I’ll try that. My mistakes are just yarn overs, also, so I think I can easily try weaving in the yarn. Thanks for the advice.

Like Renee says above… This is one of my favorite ways of fudging this sort of goof… to take a length of the same yarn, thread it in one side of the hole then out the other side of the hole… and tie the ends together, essentially pulling the hole’s opposite edges together.

Repeat as necessary.

Then you can thread each of the tie-yarn’s ends through a yarn needle and weave the end in.

This has saved my l’il butt several times over!
