First try at mittens

I’m to the point of placing [7] stitches on hold, co 3. . ., after gusset is made.

Is the yarn really supposed to stretch across like this? Won’t the thumb get caught on this yarn if wrong-looking technique is right?

Thanks. I’m so happy to find this forum.

I am not sure what you mean about the stitches stretching. You are going to put your thumb stitches on a stitch holder. (I use scrap yarn because it allows the thumb to bend into its shape.) Cast on your three stitches then knit the next stitches on your left hand needle. IT may seem sloppy the first round or so but it will neaten up. The thumb should be pulled in and rounded.

I am sorry if this didn’t answer your question, but I hope it helped.

I thought the same thing on my first pair but once you do it and then go back to Pick up the thumb stitches you will see no yarn to snag on…
