First time sock knitter, gusset question

I am knitting Knit Picks’ slipper socks, and this is the first time I’ve knitted socks. I’ve knitted the gusset and started to knit the foot part. I am confused on the following instruction:

Foot Rnd 1: K
Work even until foot measures 7” (8”, 9”) from gusset.

Where exactly do I measure from the gusset? I’ve measured from the part where I had to pick up stitches to start knitting the foot part and it seems to be REALLY long.

So, my question is really where would be the location that i measure from when they say “from gusset”?

Thanks for any help,

Jen

The gusset is the spot where you picked up stitches from the heel flap (it’s the triangular spot that accomodates the ankle).

Are these socks for you? The measurements given are likely approximations; you can always try on as you go and start the toe decreases when the sock is long enough for you. I usually start the toe decreases when the sock reaches the middle of my big toe.
