First time knitting a hat- help needed!

Hello. I’m new to knitting. I started a few weeks ago. I am making my first hat with the Caron Chunky Cupcake set. I am using this pattern

A week ago, I got to a certain point in the knitting, but I ended up making a mistake. I couldn’t figure out how to fix it, so I had to undo my entire hat and start from the beginning. My mistake occurred at the third section “shape top”. I think my mistake came from the NOTE in the instructions. What exactly does the note, “When working K1below after a dec row, be sure to insert the right handed needle into all loops of decrease worked in previous row” mean? It is very confusing for me. Thank you for the help! It is much appreciated.

Welcome to KH!

Here’s a video that may help. Basically, instead of just knitting into the stitch below, since the stitch below is a decrease, you need to knit into both stitches of the decrease.

You can also put in a lifeline on a knit row so that you don’t have to start over from the beginning.

Thank you so much for your reply! I’ll give it a try.
