First Selbu mittens

Good morning all,

I’m done with my right hand mitten and although I adore it, I clearly have some refining for the left mitt. How do I know if I have a tension problem or a problem with short stranding? Or, is that the same thing?

The pattern is Turi mittens by Inger Berg

I used Önling number 20 yarn.

I’m hoping my photo uploaded but I’m on my phone and I can only see a link, not an image …

Thank you for any tips/suggestions.

The mittens are lovely. Have you washed them yet and left flat to dry (or whatever the ballband on the yarn recommends)? That will help a bit with evening out sts.
Yes, it’s tension. It helps to space out or stretch the sts on the right hand needle when you change colors. That stretch ensures that the new color take up enough length when passed in back of the old color.

Thank you for the confirmation. No, I have not washed/blocked yet and I do intend to. Mitten number 2 I’ll pay extra attention to stretching out my floats (I really thought that I was doing that!) thanks again.

It may help to exaggerate that stretch a bit to see how the color work flattens out. You’ll work it out, I’m sure and have a beautiful pair of mittens.

Great mit!
Occassionally you may have an extra large looking stitch or an extra small looking one despite spacing out the stitches well and ensuring the floats are long enough, it could just be that the yarn is sitting in a stitch (making it big) rather than in the float at the back, or that the yarn is sitting in the float rather than in the stitch (a very small looking stitch) so that overall there is enough yarn but perhaps not in the place you ideally want it.
I like how your mit looks and think a wash always helps to relax yarn, but if you spot a particularly big or small stitch you can probably even a few out with redistributing the yarn before washing. It’s amazing how a little redistribution on a few stitches can help an entire piece look more even overall. I always have a few stitches which could benefit from a bit of attention before the wash.

More good tips, thank you!! I plan to knit the left one, compare the two, then wash them both. I will also look for those big and small stitches and experiment with redistribution. I’m really having fun with the colorwork and very much enjoying reading from a chart. There are so many methods and techniques for colorwork that it becomes a challenge to determine one’s own style!

You’re so right. Experimenting with various techniques to find one’s own style is challenging. I find at the moment I like to work stranded quite loose, I prefer the fabric drape for a sweater when it’s on a bigger needle, but then I find it hard to find a pattern as I need to adapt for the different gauge and when I knit to gauge I don’t like the firmness of the fabric so much. But perhaps I’ll change.
There’s always something new to try out in knitting.
