I am working on my second sweater (the first one has been designated a spot in a basket under my bed) I was hoping to be able to actually wear the second one. I felt the knitting part went pretty smoothly, but I need some help with the finishing. The sweater is a cardigan with wrap around ties (it’s the sweater on the cover of Interweave Knits winter 2005 issue). Anyway, the back neckline needs some help. I tried doing a single crochet edge across it but it still looks pathetic. Any advice you can give will be GREATLY appeciated. I just ordered the new Knit Fix book but it won’t be here for a few days yet.
I just looked at the pattern (call it a miracle–I found my copy of the magazine!). So that edging on the front doesn’t carry around to the back? That’s kind of dumb.
I have an idea, but I’m not sure how you’d attach at the shoulder edge. I guess you could just sew it.
You could do an applied i-cord. It would kind of match the edging on the front. Pick up stitches across the back on a circular needle. Knit 3 stitches and slide them back onto the left tip. Then knit 2, k2tog. Put these back on the left tip. Keep going across, k2, k2tog and putting them back. You’ll get a nice little icord on the edge of your knitting. You’ll have to play with how to attach them at the shoulder edge, though.
Thanks, Ingrid. I will give it a try. I kept wondering why the neck looked so bad when the rest of the sweater turned out fairly well. No, the pattern did not call for the crocheted edge, it was just an effort on my part to try and enhance the neck a little, but it really didn’t work very well.
