Fine knit for beginner?

Hi all,

I’m totally new to the knitting world but I want to make a scarf for my boyfriend already. In fact, that’s actually the reason why I want to learn to knit. I’ve watched several video tutorials of how to knit for beginners, and they only make me more motivated to run to a yarn shop and begin to stitch.

But here is the thing. The scarf that I want to make for my boyfriend is actually not the typical bulky-wooly scarf but rather thin and closely-stitched one.

I’m sorry for my limited knitting terms, but I hope you do get what I’m trying to accomplish. Or should I say I want to know how to make a fine knit scarf, as shown in the picture attached:

Since I’m so clueless about knitting, I don’t know where to begin and I thought by joining a knitters’ forum somebody could shed a light

  • Is it too difficult for beginners to make a fine-knit scarf like that?
  • What are the materials needed, what is the size of the needles?
  • Can someone share the pattern for it?

Thanks a lot before for everyone who can help me with this

Welcome to Knitting Help!

While learning to knit is much easier with larger needles and heavier yarn there are no hard and fast rules.

I can’t tell much from the picture. Do you have a pattern link?

I couldn’t find a pattern exactly like the one your wanting, but I did find some easy men’s scarfs. I hope this helps and you find just the right one for your BF.

“Bradley Scarf” (you could do this one in the same colors as the one in your picture)

"Men’s Winter Hat and Scarf"

“Luxurious Alpaca Scarf” (alpaca is SOOO soft! It’s my favorite yarn)

"Moguls Scarf"

To make a scarf as in your picture, you’ll need to understand intarsia (a color kntting technique).

You could knit this scarf horizontally, but you’ll need a REALLY long cable needle (50-70inches). And, IMO it won’t llok quite as polished as…knitting it vertically, which will require intarsia.

You can use sock or fingering weight yarn to achieve the small gauge you desire. This will then require smaller needles (US 1-4 depending on your yarn/desires), which could be straights or a short cable (but NOT dpns).

You’ll need yarn in four colors as shown (black, white, light grey, dark grey). Start with 1-2 skeins of each color but divide each skein to create smaller skeins (part of intarsia).

These scarves are knitted in this manner. Reading the patterns may be helpful to you.

Have you started knitting at all yet? You might want to learn the basics before really starting to plan for a scarf like this. IMO using larger needles and heavier yarn would be a good idea for learning. It’s up to you, however, and if you want to start with smaller needles and finer yarn, go for it! www.ravelry.com is free to join and a great place to start looking for patterns for this or anything else. Once you’ve learned the basics and decided how to go about making it, the biggest challenge I see with a scarf of this sort is that it will seem to take forever and ever to finish. You might want to be able to see something you’ve actually completed a lot sooner.

Personally I think I’d do this horizontally. Unless you knit a tube it’s going to show a bit on the back so I’d take the easier route.

I agree with GrumpyGramma I can’t imagine using a fine weight wool for a first project. You have to find a rhythm to your knitting not to mention proper tension. Seems to me most people tend to knit very tight when first learning. Bigger needles and chunky wool would be a very good starting point. Knit up much faster and be more fulfilling in the end. Good Luck and welcome to the club Knitters Unite! :woot:
