Hehe, had never done a picot edge, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I can see what a PITA it is, though.
I’m confused about something…
Next Round: Using waste yarn, k7; slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using working yarn; work in 4x1 Rib as set to end.
What do they mean? :??
Hey Jenelle! I’ll give this a shot, and if it isn’t clear, check catownedanna’s post a couple pages back.
When you get to this round, grab some contrasting yarn, anything that you don’t mind using about 10" of, and something that’ s not too bulky. You’re going to “save” some stitches in your knitting for the thumb by knitting them using this waste yarn to hold them in place until you finish knitting the rest of the rounds for the hand of the glove.
Using the waste yarn, knit 7 stitches from your dpn - I find it’s best to just make a small loop with the waste yarn, then pull that up through your first stitch on the needle - the same way you do when you’re picking up stitches. Then continue and knit six more sts with that waste yarn. So now on your right needle you have 7 stitches done in the waste yarn, and on your left needle you have 8 stitches left in your regular yarn (assuming you’ve split all your stitches onto 3 dpns).
Slip the 7 sts you made with waste yarn from your right needle back on to your left needle. Drop the end of the waste yarn (or just snip it off a couple inches away from your work), and pick up your glove yarn (the working yarn). Knit those 7 new/waste yarn stitches again, using the working yarn, then do k2, p, k4, p. [this last part is just continuing the 4x1 rib you’ve been doing all along]
If you’ve done it correctly, as you continue the rounds of the glove, you’ll have one line of stitches that stand out because they are done in the contrasting yarn color. When you’re finished with the hand, you are going to “unzip” this waste yarn and expose 2 rows of live stitches, 6 facing down from the top, and 7 facing up from the bottom (you’ll see this direction later in the pattern). This is where you tiny thumb tube will grow from to finish the glove.
I hope this helps…if someone else is at this point, maybe they can show pictures :??
Good luck!
Thank you! Now I understand how that’s going to work.
I’m using the Magic loop method though. Do you think it would matter? I did split it 20/25 like Hilde said…
I do think that this should still work the same way even with magic loop as long as you’ve marked where your “round” starts, you just knit 7 stitches in from that point. I haven’t used this method before, so I’m not positive, but I can’t see how it would change.
I just got it done and it works.
Thanks so much again!
A nickname!!! :cheering:

Oh goodie!! :happydance: So glad to help out; you are welcome!
Cat - I love it! ![]()
oooo, didn’t you have one??? I started typing Catownedanna but then I wasn’t sure if I was spelling it correctly  So i just shortened it. I HEREBY DECLARE YOU “CAT” ![]()
I think I’m going to cast on today… IF i can find the right needles. The new LYS near me doesn’t have the size I think I need (and I’ll get stuck talking there forever). I could drive an hour to the other LYS… but that seems a little much.
I thought about using my denises, but then I’d have to switch the tips every time I switched needles (I’m going to go with the 2 circs, see how it goes)
Or, I could just bite the bullet and go with the DPNs.
Ok, I’m joining in too :cheering: I don’t have a full ball of the DB tho (leftovers from Tubey) so I am going to do them striped!!!
Just going to check out the cable cast on then I’m go go go … :XX:
OOOOO the stripes will make pretty bi-colored cables
I just bought a skein of Misti Alpaca Worsted…all it says on the label is 109 yards/50 grams…no gauge or recommended needle size
I wonder if it would work. I was going to do the ones from Sally Melville’s Purl Stitch book, but I like these because they’re shorter
Would be nice in the squad car in the winters
Welcome Amanda!!
Andrea - can you find the yarn you bought online maybe?
Does it match something here. If so you could find the gauge.
I cast on for mitt #1! :cheering: The alpaca was too thin, so I’m using the yummie cascade heather that SJ got me!!!
Go Hilde!!
In your honor, I’m casting on for #2 tonight…best way to avoid SGS (Second Glove Syndrome) is to just go for it!
Well, I’ve hit a snag
I bought the wrong size needles!!! I meant to get 7s, but somehow I got 5s. I was talking to the lady in the LYS, and she was “helping” me with the needles… sigh I just wasn’t paying attention I guess. Did I notice when i took them out of the package? No… I was knitting along, and the phone rang, and when i picked up my knitting again I was like “hmmm, something’s not right…” They look REALLY good but they’re going to be way too small.
On the good side, they’d be good for my 6 year old niece, if I knew she wouldn’t LOSE them
The 2 circs thing is going well, though. Nevertheless, I’m going to have to try again tomorrow.

May the force be with you Hilde…you’ll get there!
Oh no Hilde, sorry to hear that - they do sound cute for your niece though!
Did you guys ever do that thing where you tie your mittens together on a long piece of string and hang them through your coat so you didn’t lose them in the school yard?! :rofling:

Maybe that could help if you decide to make these for your niece?
I’m determined to CO tonight, will hopefully post some kind of progess soon!
Ooooh I found some online!
Looks like my Misti is 5 stitches/inch on US 7
Ok, I’m nearly done with mitt one, and am HATING this silly picot bind off deal. It doesn’t look cute enough to be worth the bother.
Earlier, someone mentioned using a purl bind off. Where can I find instructions for that?
Thanks!!!
I’ve already bought my Encore in a yummy raspberry to make a ‘real’ set for my best friends birthday. I’d better get a move-on, her BD is 8-05!!
(Good thing we have a long standing rule that gifts received within a month of the actual observed day are considered scrupulously punctual!)
