Felting yarn?

I know that this topic has been covered many times before, but when I tried to search, I couldn’t find any answers.

I saw yarn that was a 20% wool, 80% acrylic mix. Would this felt? How’s about a 50-50 mix? 80% wool, 20% acrylic? I’m really confused about this. :??

It really really depends on the yarn. I’ve heard of some wool-acrylic mixes that do felt, but usually it has to have pretty high wool content. Also, make sure that the yarn does not say “superwash” because that means it is machine washable and will not felt, no matter what the fiber content! If you’re not sure, you’d probably have to do a test swatch of the yarn you want to use and try to felt it.

Check the label. If it says machine wash, then it won’t felt. A blend of 20 wool 80 acrylic won’t felt. That’s what blends such as Encore and Woolease are made of and they’re machine washable and dryable.

Even if it says hand wash, it’s not necessarily an indicator of feltability.

The higher the wool content, the more likely the felting, but if it’s been treated in any way, it won’t. The only way to be sure is as Mer said–try it and see.
