Felting question

I think I’m going to tackle a felting project soon - I haven’t quite decided what.

But I was wondering: how much does wool decrease in size when it’s felted? Is all wool different or is there a general pre-felting to post-felting ratio? I’ve noticed that alot of patterns, even for beginners, say that you should make the project the size you want it “pre-felting”. But if you don’t know how much it will shrink… :?? …

Thanks!

I’ve never done any (intentional) felting before, but from what I’ve read, it seems to really depend on the yarn. I think you need to felt your swatch to know for sure. (Before you do, don’t forget to make note of the “before” dimensions so you can compare it with the “after” dimensions post-felting to see what your shrinkage will be.)

Yes, different yarns do felt differently. Some felt quicker than others and some felt more overall. That is why it’s a good idea to use yarn from the same brand to make a pattern. Find a pattern first and then buy the yarn.

Here’s a post by a member here recently that states how much stockinette generally shrinks when felting. She designs felted bags so I’d definitely take her advice to heart. Good luck.
