Hello! This is my first thread. I’m a beginner knitter, have completed a few projects, mostly scarves, hats, baby booties. My next project is a felted handbag. My problem is, the yarn seems to break while casting on. I’ve never used felted yarn before. Any suggestions on how to handle this type of yarn?
What kind of yarn is it? (Can you post the manufacturer’s name)
I’ve never heard of PRE-felted yarn before. I’ve always knitted the item with wool yarn and then felted the whole thing after it was knitted.
If you’re having problems with it breaking just while casting on, I can’t even imagine trying to knit with it.
But maybe someone else will be along shortly, who’s had the same problem. But in the meantime let me know who makes the yarn and maybe that will help us figure something out for you.
My mistake. The yarn isn’t pre-felted. The yarn is Patons - SWS soy wool stripes. I didn’t realize the yarn would break so easily or I would have chosen another yarn.
Well I’m not sure what to tell you. I jumped on trusty google and it seems several bloggers also mention that it splits alot. They didn’t mention it breaking however. With splitting you just have to be extra careful (and go somewhat slower) to watch where you are inserting the needle tip.
I’d say it’s more trouble that’s it worth and see if you can’t return it to the store where you bought it, and tell them it’s terrible yarn. They might give you a store credit to pick something else out.
Also with felting, it will felt much better if it’s 100% animal fiber. This yarn you are using is 30% plant material. It will still felt it just might not felt as well.
