I joined this forum a few months ago, and enjoy reading it so much. I am really getting back into knitting and having a ball with it. I have a question…I want to knit an afghan, a fairly simple one, that won’t take forever. Ha! I have heard that the Feather and Fan pattern is a pretty one. Where could I get a simple pattern for this afghan? Book or web site? Or do you have suggestions for another easy afghan pattern?

Feather and Fan is a simple lacy pattern that’s very pretty. You can find it in almost any stitch dictionary, including the Barbara Walker Treasury of Knitting Stitches.
To make an afghan, cast on as many stitches as you need for the width you want and knit in the F&F pattern until it’s long enough. You can add a few stitches on each side for a simple garter stitch border.
If you want an actual, written-out pattern, Google Feather & Fan Afghan. You’ll find many online variations.

I looked that pattern up, too, and it’s really pretty! I have a question about one of the steps.
Here’s the pattern:
Row 1: K
Row 2: P
Row 3: K 2 tog 3 times, (<–what does this mean??) YO, K1 6 times, K 2 tog 3 times repeat to border.
Row 4: K
The rest of it looks pretty straightforward.
K2tog 3 times means you should: when you come to that part, knit the next 2 stitches together, then do it again over the next 2, and again over the next 2. It will be over a total of 6 stitches, and you will decrease 3. That way, with a K2tog 3 times on each end, you have balanced out the increases in the 6 yo in the middle. Does that make sense? I’m working on one now, and have made a shawl in the pattern before - its’ one of my favorites. Good luck!

So in the middle the “YO K1 6 times” means yarn over six times? Sorry, I’m a bit of a dunce at these instructions. They’re just a muddle of gibberish to me!

“YO K1 6 times” means YO and k1, YO and k1, etc until you’ve done it 6 times. You decreased 3 sts on the 3 k2tog which is also on the other side of the YO K1, so you end up with the same number of sts you start with.

I used this pattern - it is free, and as with most patterns online, anyone can use them. The copyright business is not so much for patterns for your own personal use, but more if you are, say, planning on making a bunch to sell or something. For my shawl, I used a cotton silk blend - probably light worsted to dk wieght with a little bigger needle than recommended on the ball band. I’m not sure though - it’s been a while.
There is another pattern using feather and fan here (you have to scroll down to where it says download - again it’s free). The pattern is a touch easier because there are no row increases to keep track of - just straight knitting. It also gives options for shawl, scarf, and throw.

Beth, the one from Knit Picks is the one I’m making! It’s turning out beautifully. I’m doing the shawl, for my DMom, in Caron SS Autumn~I love the color, and the pattern. It’s so pretty and really so easy! Except for once when I messed up :teehee: But it wasn’t too bad, lol.
I used the feather and Fan stitch to make a baby blanket for a friend in a weather forum, I go to. I used Bernat’s Softee Baby in the Bunny Prints. The first blanket I did has been sent to the friend and she loved it. The second blanket has to wait until I get paid after I go back to work in two weeks before I can send it to the person I made it for.
I just started a throw with some KP Suri Dream - I had the yarn for a while and my cousin just moved so I thought I’d make her a throw as a housewarming gift. I messed up the FIRST repeat!:hair: And that stuff is such a mess to frog (probably why it is still in my stash:teehee: ). I might have to switch yarns … a couple colors of SS might be the thing.
Hereis a wonderful pattern for a feather and fan blanket. I haven’t tried it yet, but it is on my list to be tried very soon. Let me know if this helps.

…and don’t forget to use markers between each repeat of 18 sts . that’s after you do the sts for the border.
I used stitch markers between every repeat of stitches when I made the blankets. But my borders were done in seed stitch instead of a garter stitch.
