Favorite Heel For Hand Knitted Socks

What kind of heel do you prefer to knit and why? I’ve only done short row heels because I like the look of that better, but I’m wondering if there is a reason why it seems like most people do the gusset heel.

does one wear better? Is one easier to knit?

I’ve only tried the short-row heel once; it was so full of holes that I never knit one again. I typically use the round French heel for my socks and love it. Here’s a great chart for different heel styles and how to shape them. I use the chart often.

Awesome! I’ve bookmarked that!

I’ve only done the traditional gusset and short row. I prefer doing the short row heel, because I do find that it fits my heel better and the entire sock fits my foot better. I often find that the traditional heel flap ends up being to big on my foot. Which I know I can fix that, but I’m not that good yet. I need to bond with more socks :shifty:

My favorite right now is a slight variation of the round heel for toe up socks – it’s got gussets and a heel flap, but no stitches to pick up. (I think the heel for Knitty’s Baudelaire may have been based on the round heel.)

i have tried all the heels (on that chart) and others… i love learning a new heel, and don’t really have a favoite…

some fit a bit better but are harder to work, (i like to make socks 2 at a time on 2 circ’s, and some style of heel are not particulary suited for that)

some are easier to work, but so-so in fit.

I keep playing with different styles…

you can see 30 or so my socks, in my photogallery. no 2 are really the same. there are duplicated of heels (but with different cast on’s, or different styles of toe shaping… some are cuff down, some are toe up)

(i have been a sock slacker–i knit a pair a month last year, but towards the end of the year, i got into knitting hats… and have touched sock yarn in 6 weeks! Now i am knitting a baby sweater, and then i need to make yet another hat… but i’ll get back to socks… )

I picked the short row heel but I do a variation of it. I love the “no wrap - no gap” short row slip stitch heel from Queen Kahuna’s Crazy Toes & Heels Sock Book.

I read somewhere (most likely on this board) that the short row heel doesn’t wear as well as the gusset heel.
