I checked my gauge, went up a whole mm in needles for the fair isle section. I have knit a beautiful sock leg, but tried it on the recipient and no way will it stretch enough to go over the heel because of the stranding. All that work down the drain :(:waah:
If I made it loose enough there would be loops to catch toes. Should I give up on Fair Isle socks? Is there a solution? Can I turn them into mittens? (just approaching summer here LOL!) I have never made a mitten before.:hair:
I still want to make the socks, they are for my ds’s 13th birthday in a few weeks, but I want them to FIT! I was using a custom sock pattern that KEDEK posted and just adding in the Fair Isle.
When making socks with color work you have to work very losely or it won’t go on…I’m bad about wanting to give it a tug…and then end up with it being to tight as well…What I do to avoid long stretches of carry yarn is I weave/wrap the yarn every 3rd stitch… this way I don’t have long carries of yarn…hereis a good video to show the weave…
Here are two of my socks that I have done color work on…
Wow! Your socks are great! I was really pleased with the way mine were going until the try-on. It was addictive seeing the pattern develop. I even knitted his name into them… I’m thinking of just casting it off or putting waste yarn in and starting over. I can’t bear to rip out my first Fair Isle and it took hours and hours. Thanks for the link but I can’t view it, I’m on Ubuntu not Windows:( Can you describe the weaving thing?
I know how it can feel… the pink and black ones were my first… took a few months and I don’t know how many froggings and trying again…many times it didn’t fit… it’s heartbreaking…
I’m not the best at describing things but I’ll give it a try…
Let’s say I’m to knit 5 black stitches…I would knit 3 and then I would lay my pink over the black…kinda holding it down so I don’t grab it instead…then when I enter the 4th stitch I knit the black and the pink is locked in between then…
I did find thiswebsites that show pictures…you just click on the pictures going across to see the other shots… she does it different than I do…but I think I’m going to try this next time and see…
