Hi. My name is Evette. It’s my first time on this site. I’m also a beginner in knitting. I do have a question regarding a pattern and I hope maybe someone can help me. I have a pattern which I have a little trouble understanding the shaping section of the mitten.
There are two sizes of the mitten which reads 35 stitches for the small and 39 stitches for medium.
The shaping section reads “M1 increase at each end of this & following alternate row (35) (39) st.“
Can someone
please help me with understanding what to do here, thank you.
Hi and welcome to KH and to knitting!
What is the name of your pattern?
You’re to work an increase, a M1, at the beginning and the end of the current row. Then work across one row with no increases and finally, repeat the inc row on the following row.
You should end with the given number of sts for your size.
Enjoy knitting these lovely mitts!
Please use the pencil icon in the lower right of the post, however to delete the scans. We can’t post large portions of patterns due to copyright (even free patterns).
Hi. Sorry. I just wanted you to see the shaping section of the pattern to see what I was having problems understanding.
Thanks
Evette.
Thank you for that. If my post above doesn’t answer your question, just point out where the problem is and we’ll all try to help.
Before the row below, you have 35 sts.
Shaping:
next row – m1 inc at each end of this & following alternate row [35 (39) st]
When you m1 at each end of this row, that’s 2sts increased. Then work the next purl row and then repeat the increase row once more (that’s the following alternate row). That’s 2 more sts for a total of 39sts (4sts total increased).
Thank you so much for your help. I am going to try that.
It is telling you that if you’re making the smaller size you will have 35 stitches at the end of the round and if you’re making the larger size you will have 39 stitches at the end of the round.
Hi sorry to be a bother. This is my first knitting mittens and you have been of great thus far.
My next question is about the stitch holder on the thumb shaping section. It reads “next row - k17 (19) St, pm, M1,inc., K1, M1 inc., PM, K, to end,
continue In pattern increasing one St after the first marker and a second St before the second St before last marker, place 13, (15) St on St holder, purl to end.
Work St St for another 4 cm ending in a Ws row.
Work 3 row in 1 x 1 rib.
Bind of pattern.
Question
- Where it says continue in pattern increasing one St after the first marker and a second stitch before the second. Can you explain what that means.
- Place stitches on place marker. Do I bring the stitch holder to front on the knitting side? How and when do I work the stitches on the stitch holder. ?
Please help. I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
next row – k17 (19) st , pm, m1 inc, k1, m1 inc, pm, k to end. continue in pattern increasing one st after fisrt marker & a second st
before last marker on every knit row until 13 (15) st between markers.
next row – p to marker, place 13 (15) st on st holder, purl to end.
The increased sts are going to expand the area between the 1st and 2nd stitch markers to make room for the thumb. You’ll be increasing inside the 2 markers, once after marker 1 and once before marker 2 on a row. It’ll look like this —/increase ----increase— where the forward and back slashes are the stitch markers.
The easiest stitch holder to use for this is some scrap yarn. Use a tapestry needle to thread the sts onto the scrap yarn and hold it to the front. If it falls to the back it’s ok but it’s easier to envision the thumb and mitt if the sts are held to the front. You’ll work the thumb sts later where it says:
“place st from holder on needle & work 2 rows in 1 x 1 rib. bind off in pattern.”
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
