EZ Knitter's Almanac Baby Sweater help

I’m beginning to think this wasn’t a good choice for a first sweater pattern but I’m not a new knitter. Has anyone used this pattern, what size does it turn out to be? She doesn’t say anything about what size baby this will fit or how to make it bigger if necessary. Help please!

Is that the one with the garter yoke and gull lace bottom? You can make it fit nearly any size - do the incs until the back sts are about half the desired finished measurement, then knit the sleeves and body until long enough. If you don’t have a baby or baby clothes to measure, you can take a look at this measurement chart. You want 2-3 inches of ease in the chest, and it’s okay if the sleeves are longer, they can be turned up and baby can wear it for a few more months or weeks.

Suzy’s chart seems to start with a three month size. If you need preemie or newborn sizes, here’s another good chart.

Well newborns can generally wear a 3m size easily, preemies would be a lot smaller. But babies always grow fast, no matter what size they start at.

I make a lot of baby sweaters and I don’t mind them being a little large. Better than too small. In fact I generally make a size that appears to fit a 6 mos old. I don’t even measure or worry about it.

Hi Suzeeq,
When my first son was born, a 3 month size of clothing swallowed him. He weighed only 3lbs 7 1/2 ozs but was full term . He suffered uterine growth retardation, drs could say what caused it but I suspected it was the 2nd hand cigarette smoke I had to breathe while I was pregnant. I am a non smoker but my co-workers were chain smokers. At 6 months of age he was finally able to wear newborn sized clothing. He is now 35as of May 7 and still wears clothing that is not man’s sized. He shops in the teen boys section of stores. He has never weighed more than 98 lbs in his life. He also was born with kidney disease and eventually had to have a kidney transplant on Sept 2, 2000.

Oh sure, there’s always exceptions. Most newborns are in the 6-8 pound range though, and can usually fit into a 3 mo size by 4 weeks, if not sooner. I didn’t bother with too many newborn sizes for my babies, put them into 3-6 mo from the start.
