Eyelet Pattern Help!

Hello everyone! I am working on an eyelet top and am having some problems with the pattern. First, let me tell you that the eyelet stitched is worked over a multiple of 4 sts +1. The eyelet stitch is listed as follows:

Row 1 (rs): k1, yfwd, sl2, k1, psso, yfwd, rep from * to *, end with k1.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: k3, yfwd, sl2, k1, psso, yfwd, k1, rep from * to *, end with k3 (instead of k1).
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Rep from row 1.

The part I need some clarification on is when the increase rows start:
Next row (in the pattern this turns out to be a row 1 of the eyelet stitch): k1, inc1, pattern to last 2 sts, inc 1, k1. Rep this inc row every 10 rows 4 times, then every 8 rows 4 times and, [B]as you work the increases, if the row is short of a st to form the eyelet pattern, beg with k1, sl1, k1, psso, yfwd, pattern to last 3 sts, yfwd, k2tog, k1[/B].

My confusion is on the rows during the increases that have a multiple of 4 sts + 3 (instead of the 4 sts +1 required for the eyelet stitch). Can anyone give me example rows of Row 1 and Row 3 in the above eyelet stitch for the instances when I will not have the correct number of stitches for the eyelet stitch? I am confused by the pattern’s description of what to do in these cases. You could give me an example for 11 stitches for Rows 1 and 3 (which would be a multiple of 4 sts + 3). It appears that as you increase, you’ll be adding enough sts to make another eyelet and those directions are for what to do when that occurs if the eyelet is needed before you complete the whole 4 st increase and enough to make a complete stitch pattern.

Thank you so much for your help, mwhite. My confusion with the pattern is this: After the first increase row, for example, I will have 9 more rows (until the next increase row, when I will be back to 4 sts +1) with a multiple of 4 sts + 3. Throughout those 9 rows, I will have to implement the modifications the pattern suggests for the rows short of st for the eyelet pattern. How do I implement the modifications the pattern suggests for rows 1 and 3 of the eyelet stitch pattern? For example, for eyelet stitch row 3, after I implement the modifications k1, sl1, k1, psso, yfwd…where do I start from here? Do I skip the k3? Or do I just keep repeating these modifications until the last 3 sts? This is where I am confused! I truly appreciate your help on this. Thanks again.

“if the row is short of a st to form the eyelet pattern” this is your key instruction for the modification.

" if the row is short of a st to form the eyelet, [COLOR=“Red”]pattern to last 3 sts[/COLOR]" this will be your usual stitch pattern, not a modification. It looks like the only time you use the modification is at the beginning of a row that is short of a st to form the eyelet.

Thanks again for the help. If I am on a row 3 of the eyelet stitch pattern, and I am on a 4 sts + 3 row (short of sts for the 4 sts + 1 eyelet pattern), I will do as stated and begin with: k1, sl1, k1, psso, yfwd. Then where do I start row 3 to “pattern to last 3 sts”? Do I start with the k3? Or do I skip to the *yfwd, sl2, k1, etc. I cannot get the stitches to come out mathematically correct. I am using a row of 11 stitches in my mind to do the calculations (a multiple of 4 sts + 3). I am trying to figure out what the row would look like all written out:

Regular Row 3: k3, yfwd, sl2, k1, psso, yfwd, k1, rep from * to *, end with k3 (instead of k1).

Modified Row 3: [B]k1, sl1, k1, psso, yfwd,[/B] k3, yfwd, sl2, k1, psso, yfwd, k1, rep from * to * [B]to last 3 sts, yfwd, k2tog, k1[/B]. This modified row does not come out correctly mathematically, so I am very confused! I also do not understand how rows 1 and 3 of the eyelet stitch pattern would share the same modification. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Think you’re going to have to actually knit it…

k1, sl1, k1, psso, yfwd, from what I see actually replaces the 3 sts and uses 4 sts

yfwd, k2tog, k1, replaces the 3 sts and uses 4 sts

Thanks for the advice. Every way I try it, I just cannot get the number of stitches to work out. I am an engineer, so I naturally like to mathematically plan everything out before I start! Since it is only one extra stitch on each side anyway, I may just knit that extra stitch on every row and continue with the middle stitches in the regular eyelet stitch pattern. With any luck, they will probably be concealed in the seam anyway. Thanks again, and have a nice evening!

Some knitting you can’t figure out in your head and have to follow the pattern with the yarn and needles in hand to see where it’s going. That may bother your engineer’s brain, but that’s how it is… :wink:
