Hi!!
I’m a brand new knitter and am tackling fingerless gloves from a pattern on Raverly.com. They are super cute(see photo below). I’m also using 5 DPNs. I’m trying to figure out how to work w/a thumb gusset. What has me confused is rejoining the hand part of the work to continue working in the round. I joined them as the pattern instructed however now instead of ten stitches, on one of the four needles, I have 11! Ugh!! Can someone please tell me if this is correct? Below is the section of the pattern where the trouble began.
Mil Gracias!

Hand
Knit to first marker, remove marker, place 11 (13, 15) thumb stitches onto a piece of waste yarn. Cast on 1 stitch over gap and rejoin in the round, keeping the end of round marker in place. 35 (40, 45) stitches.
Continue in St st until work measures 1/2 inch from the top of the thumb gusset. Repeat Rounds 1-11 of Lace Stitch pattern.
Knit 4 rounds.
Rep turning round.
Knit 4 rounds.
Bind off all stitches.
Is your total stitch count up by 1?
Hi GG!
Yes it is up by one.
Thanks!
Check for accidental yarn overs, especially when switching from one needle to the next. They’re easy to do. Your stitch count should match that given in the pattern.
I’ve made these myself and I really like them.
The extra stitch occurred when I was trying to Cast on 1 stitch over gap and rejoin in the round, I think it went downhill after that. I tried watching videos but couldn’t find one to explain it well enough for DPNs. Any ideas?
That’s awesome that you made these as well!
Thanks mucho!
You should have 35sts before you start the thumb gusset, one stitch gets used for the thumb and one stitch is cast on so that you start the hand with 35sts again. Check that you had 35sts before the gusset. You could use a knit cast on or a backwards loop cast on to make that extra st which closes the gap at the thumb.
If you can’t see where the extra stitch came from, then just k2tog someplace unnoticeable like the pinkie edge of the mitt. You could do that now or wait till you get to the row before the lace pattern repeat.
They are lovely!
There are tons of videos out there for knitting in the round on double points and circulars. However, one of the things they never show you is where to position your yarn when you go to join. I had this extra stitch on mine because I was placing my working yarn (the yarn that comes from the skein) in back of the front and back needles. This gave me that unwanted yarn over. You need to place your working yarn BETWEEN your front and back needles. Or in other words, it should be coming from the inside of the circle. You have to be sure your yarn is between both needles every time you switch needles. This is for DP’s and magic loop.
