What does increase one stitch at each end of every foll alt 4th row mean?
Does it mean
- simply increase one stitch at the ends of every 4th row?
- OR increase one stitch at the ends of every ALTERNATE 4th row?
- OR one stitch at the ends of every second row four times?
I am stuck!
Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
Can you quote the row exactly please?
It’s curious. It says every alternate 4th row. Why not say every 8th row instead of every alternate 4th row?
Pattern information may help.
Thank you so much for your reply. The pattern says Ivy 6. that’s all. It is a sweater that can be worn by boys and girls. I’m knitting it for my grandson. I misinterpreted the instruction to mean increasing one stitch at the end of every ALTERNATE fourth row, and it ended up much too long. Heartbreak – I had to unravel it all. Now I dont’ know what to do. It says “every foll alt 4th row” – direct quote.
Thanks again!
Patricia
Sorry it says Design 6 IVY.
I’m not finding any patterns by that name. Can you take a photo of the cover picture? And maybe a photo of just that part of the pattern? Not the whole pattern, due to copyright, but it’s OK to post a section.
Sure. I’ll do that now. Thank you!
Did you get that? If so, I have two others to send.
Hello
Thanks for the pic
You’ve misunderstood the instruction.
The “alt” and the “4th” belong to different sizes.
Which size are you making?
For the first size it’s increase every alternate row.
For the second size it’s increase every 4th row
For the third size it’s increase every 4th row
And so on.
Then there is a stitch count for each size so when you reach that number you stop using that increase instruction.
The next part increases less frequently
First size is every 4th row
Second size is very 6th row
Third size is every 6th row
And when you reach the stitch count given for the size you stop increasing.
You’ll work straight to the length given for size
First size 19 cm
Second size 23 cm
Third size 27 cm
(I like to go a bit longer for kids so there is a bit of growing room in arm length you can add a bit extra here if wanted)
I hope this helps. Let us know how you get on or if you need any more help.

You are wonderful. I am so grateful! It’s winter here in Sydney so I can now get on with the sweater for my little grandson!
Thank you for the time and trouble you have taken.
Warmest,
Patricia
You’re very welcome.
Do come back if you’re at all unsure.
Enjoy your knitting
Good catch, @Creations! I read it 2 or 3 times and found it just as confusing as @patriciaazarias, but now I see it. I think it could have been written better, or maybe if the alt was in italics, to call attention to the fact that it’s an instruction and not just the end of the line of text, it would be clearer. We see " every alt row" so often, it just seemed to flow like that.

Man was that a poor choice for writing it out. The (4th, 4th,4th,4th,4th) is telling you that it means every 4th row for every size.
On the positive it says end the ribbing with RS facing instead of ending with a WS row - same thing but one is clearer.
I interpret ‘every 4th row’ to mean every other RS row. Anything to avoid counting as much as I can. lol
