I am making this sweater. I am up to yoke. I am at shape neck at 3 1/2" (I have 10 more rows to complete first 2 rows. I understand 5 stitches on holder. I also understand the instructions dec 2 stitches at rs side rows. Its the Next Row that there is an error. I don’t understand leave rem sts on spare needle. Then the Neckband says pick up 65 stitches evenly spaced. I never bind off stitches. What stitches do I pick up? see pattern
You’re right. There seems to be a mistake in the pattern. Best thing would be to bind off the remaining sts and then pick up for the neckband, including the held front sts. (This bind off followed by pick up gives a nice sturdy neck area.)
As a second method, you could knit across the sts from the right front holder, pick up along the neck shaping, work across the sts on the spare needle, pick up along the left neck shaping and work across the front held sts.
It’s also worth sending a message to Lion Brand to ask in case they intended some other way of working this.
I have written lion. I went on their website and found a pattern similar.
The directions are clearer but they leave out the bind off in that one as well.
Good. It’ll be interesting to see what they say.
I have a feeling they are considering the sts on the needle as a holder so the only sts that need to be created are along the neck shaping.
Here is answer from Lion Yarn
The pattern is correct as published. Most commonly, knitters misinterpret “18 more times” as 18 rows – it should be 2 rows 18 times, or 36 rows total worked (18 of which are decrease rows). Another common error is to stop working the yoke decreases when the measurement for the neck shaping is reached. The yoke shaping must continue even as the neck shaping is started in order for all of the decreases to be completed.
Once you have completed all of the decreases, you will have 45 live stitches remaining. The instructions have you transfer those stitches to a spare needle because you will be picking up other stitches before you get to them. To pick up the 65 sts needed for the neck band, you will pick up the 5 sts from the first holder, the remaining live stitches, 5 sts from the side between the remaining live stitches and the holder, and finally the 5 sts from the remaining holder.
I hope this helps – please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Yup, I agree. Thanks for posting the Lion Brand reply and enjoy finishing up the sweater!
